Top Ten Double Masters Reprints

Reddit

Hello happy people! Don't forget to keep yourself safe in our Modern COVID-19 world and sane as well! And perhaps a few other four-letter words that begin with "s" as well! Like same! Or soma! Or sail! I hope you are having sail day today! Or a sale day; Homonym Boy strikes again!

Now let's start my article!

Have you had a chance to take a gander at the Double Masters spoiler? (It's here if you haven't). It's been out for a while now and I've had time to sit with it for a bit. Take a non-alcoholic drink and review it a few times.

What reprints hit me as great? Which ones am I exited to see? Which ones are punching me in my gut with their Happy Fist Attack Power(TM)?

To make this list I really want to see something that was overdue for a reprint. Not something that gets lots of Masters reprints like Mana Crypt. Just like Grim Tutor in Core Set 2021 was overdue for a reprinting, what are the Grim Tutors of this Masters set?

Honorable Mention #1 - Grand Architect

Grand Architect

Let's kick things off with this un-reprinted card from Scars of Mirrodin. I love Grand Architect. It's a leader for mono-blue builds and aggro decks. It's a leader for artifact decks as well. It plays into two major archetypes. Tapping your blue boys for 2 mana apiece (for artifacts) is downright awesome. This card has a high level of quality. Enjoy it!

Honorable Mention #2 - Geist of Saint Traft

Geist of Saint Traft

Let's turn now to a card that dominated during its Standard run and had a few lower level reprints; this is its first major reprint since Innistrad. This had a big imprint on the format due to the high level of power and toughness available when it swings with a low cost and the hexproof on the key card prevents a lot of removal options from interacting with the Geist of Saint Traft. I also like this as a leader in Commander, and over on EDHREC.com there are 344 decks registered of people who agree with me! I cannot wait to draft and build around him. Enjoy it!

Honorable Mention #3 - Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer

Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer

Let's finish up our honorable mentions with this bad boy from Commander 2018. This was a feature in the Red/Blue artifact-matters deck, and he is very popular in casual world with 1,391 decks registered over at EDHREC.com. It's the fourth most-played commander in that popular color combination! As you can see, netting some Brudiclads for your deck stock is great. This is a leader who was a big hit among casual audiences and Brudiclad is beloved. Enjoy it!

10. Hammer of Nazahn

Hammer of Nazahn

It's a little weird that Hammer of Nazahn is here but not Nazahn, Revered Bladesmith, but hey what are you going to do? Coming from Commander 2017 this farflung hammer has a lot of value going for it. It rocks a free equip on arrival and gives you the indestructible you might get from a similarly costed Darksteel Plate as well as netting some power up front. It basically combines Bonesplitter and Darksteel Plate into one card, and that's value at the kitchen table I can get behind. Enjoy it!

9. Walking Ballista

Walking Ballista

Hello friend! You have dominated a few formats over the years and were recently banned in Pioneer format last week. (You can check out the format postings here). This thing was a big giant face smashing fun time. It's one of the best of its kind as an improved Triskelion. It's heavily played in casual world and it was due for another go around the bin. Enjoy it!

8. Puresteel Paladin

Puresteel Paladin

Hello, Paladin friend! I hope your day is going well! This heavily played equipment-loving machine is awesome. Adding card drawing to white is awesomer. This color needs it! And getting free equips is awesomest when you need it. What's not to love? Are you not a fan of drawing cards or getting free equips? What's not to love here? Enjoy it!

7. The Swords not Printed in Modern Masters 2013 - Sword of Body and Mind, Sword of Feast and Famine, and Sword of War and Peace

Sword of Body and Mind
Sword of War and Peace
Sword of Feast and Famine

Sword of Fire and Ice and Sword of Light and Shadow have had entrances in Masters sets before so they are not in this list, but the other three are new to this printing. Overdue, really. All of them have been printed before in smaller versions like the Kaladesh Masterpieces, but this is their first major reprinting since their first appearance back in Scars of Mirrodin block. They are beloved at the casual and kitchen table by fans of Commander and other casual formats. Enjoy them!

6. Breya, Etherium Shaper

Breya, Etherium Shaper

Hello fans of Breya! It may not feel like it, but she was printed way back in Commander 2016. That's a lot of years ago! She has been one of the most beloved leaders in Commander with 2,713 decks registered over at EDHREC.com making her the 17th most-popular leader out there! Like I said, beloved. Do you like artifacts? Who doesn't! Do you hate green? Who doesn't! (That was a joke). She had gone so long without a new printing that she was increasing in price a bit here and there, but no longer! Welcome back! Enjoy it!

5. Oubliette

Oubliette

Man, it's been a while! Arabian Nights common. And then.... Double Masters. No other card in this set could have waited this long! Welcome back! This card has a lot of fans as it does something a little different for Black. It plays into phasing out territory and removing something until it leaves. It feels like Oblivion Ring or a Blue effect with its phasing. And yet here it is. Early Black often feels like modern White as Demonic Torment was the first Pacifism-ish in aura form from Legends (it was an early version of Pacifism before it was cleanly templated and moved to White in Mirage.) This card is massively old school and has a lot of fans, including me! It's been a while. I started playing the game back in The Dark, so this card has existed longer than I've been playing, and I've been playing a long time. Oubliette! Enjoy it!

4. Mana Echoes

Mana Echoes

Are you a fan of infinite winning combos? This bad boy is the key in many an infinite mana shell. It makes a ton of colorless mana that you can use to pay the cost you spent to make more mana. It doesn't even have the modern templating of "nontoken," so casting Release the Dogs from Jumpstart will make 16 colorless mana. This is the engine that could! And it's never been printed since its original debut long long long ago in Onslaught. (and it has a high price tag too)It's been a long time coming. Enjoy it!

3. Arcum Dagsson

Arcum Dagsson

Coldsnap. Double Masters. That's it! This amazing Artificer is rocking the block with its great power. As a dedicated pacifist you can tap Tinker a creature that punches into a non-creature that won't hurt anyone. That restriction wasn't much! This guy grew expensive as his casual demand grew. He is registered to lead in 237 decks as well as getting played in 1,758 decks which around 1% of the time, quite high for all decks in the format and given his artifact needing value. Dude's good! Enjoy it!

2. Atraxa, Praetors' Voice

Atraxa, Praetors' Voice

There was a time when Atraxa, Praetors' Voice was the most-played legendary creature ever as a Commander. That day has passed as Muldrotha, the Gravetide has passed Atraxa (very quickly.) But Atraxa hasn't fallen far. With 4,818 decks registered she is still the second most-registered leader in the format. To use the word beloved is to discredit that word as it can't come close to how enamored the community is with her. I think there are a few reasons why. She has every color wanted from ramp to counters to removal. Her proliferate works in tons of shells from Four-Color Planeswalkers to Four-Color +1/+1 Counters Matter. She can even just be a Four-Color Good Stuff leader with one fewer color and all of the cards you want anyway. She's even a solid 4 mana, four ability 4/4, so she's a powerful on curve option! There is nothing not to like here, and her cost was a lot of dollars. Enjoy it!

1. Mana Reflection

Mana Reflection

And now it's time for a breakdown. Before this thing was reprinted, you were never gonna get it. The Reflection cycle hasn't been reprinted since it debuted in the low-demand, underprinted Shadowmoor. It and Eventide are scarce with the cards and high with the price. This thing was clocking in at around $40-$50, but it was a big hefty investment for a simple and powerful card. This just doesn't increase your mana production from your lands like Mirari's Wake or something similar by a single mana. Nope! It doubles lands instead. Temple of the False God? 4 mana! And it's not just lands either. Your artifacts are doubled as well so all those mana rocks are doubled too. Sol Ring? FOUR colorless mana! Darksteel Ingot? 2 mana of any one color. But it also works on dorks as well from Llanowar Elves to Birds of Paradise. And if you have a way of making a lot of mana via something like Gaea's Cradle or Priest of Titania then you are getting TWO lots of mana from that effect. That's a lot of power in one card. Enjoy it!

And there we have it! What did you think of my list? Anything in there that you agreed or disagreed with? What are you most excited to see reprinted from the set? Enjoy it!
