Kaladesh Set Review: White

Reddit

Welcome back! I hope you’ve enjoyed the set review thus far. We’ve covered Red/Lands, Blue/Artifacts, and today we will be going over the White cards in the set. White has proven to be pretty powerful in Standard, let’s see what all it gain from Kaladesh!

The points system for refrence

0 Will never see play in Standard (Geyserfield Stalker)

1 Unlikely to see any play (Isolation Zone)

2 Could see fringe play, or occasional SB card (Caustic Caterpillar)

3 Commonly played. Staple in a single deck, or frequent play in several decks. (Reflector Mage)

4 Format Staple, sees play in multiple decks, one of the best cards in the format. (Sylvan Advocate)

5 Format warping. Every deck plays this, or is built with this card in mind. (Spell Queller/Collected Company)

Acrobatic Maneuver - 2

New “Mulldrifter” is good with this card, may be too slow for the format. Blinking is always better with a larger card pool.

Aerial Responder - 2

Definite Sideboard card, could see main deck play if the format becomes aggressive enough.

Aetherstorm Rock - 1.5

Nothing too exciting here. I don’t expect this bird to see play, especially over something like Gisela, the Broken Blade or Gideon, Ally of Zendikar, however, energy is hard to evaluate. This doesn’t generate much unless you manage to combo off somehow by putting a bunch of creatures onto the battlefield.

Angel of Invention - 3

G/W Tokens all star. Possible Sideboard card as well for White-based control decks. It’s an anthem that also spit out creatures or it’s a Gisela that loses first strike for vigilance, not a bad trade. The only downside this thing has is that it competes with Archangel Avacyn in the 5 mana slot.

Authority of the Consuls - 2

This is a fine Sideboard card. It’s nice to not have to worry about dying to a vehicle after you clear the board. Also stops Splinter Twin/Deceiver Exarch in an alternate universe.

Aviary Mechanic - 2

I could do this for Kor Skyfisher, this one isn’t nearly as good unless you are really abusing the “return a permanent you control to its owner’s hand.” I don’t think it will see play but I also wouldn’t be shocked if it was a one off in a Artificer deck. It is a Dwarf and an Artificer both good things to be.

Built to Last - 1.5

Small pump spells like this have seen play but mostly in Heroic. This can save one of your creatures, act like a shock, or kill off a creature.

Captured by the Consulate - 1

Just too much for an awkward Pacifism that still lets the creature block. Hopefully that means Pia Nalaar can break free. Or maybe since she can block, she’ll take a bullet for Chandra . . .  CONSPIRACY!

Cataclysmic Gearhulk - 3

A Tragic Arrogance where the opponent gets to keep their best permanents. It’s still on a body, though, and that makes it main deckable.

Consulate Surveillance - 2

Really like this card, hoping we have enough energy producers to abuse this one.

Consul’s Shieldguard - 1

Too much mana, no thank you!

Eddytrail Hawk - 1.5

If you’re an aggressive deck do you really want this? Sure it lets your Gideon bash through for five damage but Gideon doesn’t need help doing that. I’d just rather play a better creature in my aggro deck that is good on its own.

Fairgrounds Warden - 2.5

Banisher Priest and Fiend Hunter both saw play while in Standard. This one is no different, great against other creature decks. Really like it against Spell Queller since you get your spell back and if Fairgrounds Warden is Reflector Mage’d that’s okay since the Queller won’t eat another spell.

Fragmentize - 2.5

A staple in sideboards. Four is a lot.

Fumigate - 3

This is the go to 5 mana wrath in the format. I like this a lot more than Planar Outburst. Even if they have a Selfless Spirit, it could buy you enough time to wrath again or do something else on your next turn. Say something like, Descend Upon the Sinful?

Gearshift Ace - 2

It’s a dwarf, otherwise I’d give this guy a 1.5. First Strike isn’t nearly as good as Haste in a aggro deck but it is relevant.

Glint-Sleeve Artisan - 2

Good creature type to be and it makes 3 toughness and 3 power for 3 mana. I’ve seen White Weenie decks play worse.

Herald of the Fair - 1

Just play Intangible Virtue if you want this type of affect.

Impeccable Timing - 1.5

WHO LET THE CAT OUT OF THE BAG?! WHERE DID AJANI COME FROM?! Well no matter, it’s a very medium removal spell, I’d much rather play Blessed Alliance. Hopefully Ajani’s next Planeswalker card can be better than the card that introduced him to Kaladesh.

Inspired Charge - 1

Intangible Virtue, Gideon, and Gisela. No, thank you.

Master Trinketeer - 2

Big Upside. Just depends how easily your deck creates artifact creatures. He can be a lord with 3 power that spits out 2/2s mid to late game. Not bad.

Ninth Bridge Patrol - 1

He’s patrolling that Ninth Bridge because he’s not good enough to patrol bridge 1-8. Thalia's Lieutenants are on the other bridges. I don’t want a card that rewards me for my aggressive creatures dying, I’d rather just make more creatures or pump the ones I already have.

Pressure Point - 1.5

Maybe in some sort of Fog type deck that really wants to cycle through some cards? This card has been in Standard before and has seen no play. Maybe it might see some light of day in this format if a fog type deck gets established.

Propeller Pioneer - 1

Too much mana, only Limited.

Refurbish - 2.5

Zombie for artifacts. We have Gearhulks currently and might get better things in Aether Revolt. A good one to keep an eye on.

Revoke Privileges - 1

So you want to Revoke that creature that’s already crewed a vehicle and attacked you for a bunch? No thank you.

Servo Exhibition - 2.5

Dragon Fodder for White. This one I can get behind, especially since artifacts are very relevant in this set!

Skyswirl Harrier - 1

This is passable in Limited. We have way better things in Standard.

Skywhaler’s Shot - 2

FIRST THEY FUMIGATE THE GREMLINS. NOW THEY KILL THE WHALES?! White is evil man, pure evil. Still really like Blessed Alliance or Stasis Snare over this.

Tasseled Dromedary - 1

I mean . . .  Kraken Hatchling saw some very, very rare play. Wouldn’t hold my breath though. However . . .  I would like to ride this fancy camel.

Thriving Ibex - 1

This cycle is just too much mana for the energy. Again, good for Limited though.

Toolcraft Exemplar - 3.5

This card is going to be a staple in the aggressive White artifact deck. I fully expect Tom Ross or Craig Wescoe to abuse this card.

Trusty Companion - 1.5

“Can’t attack alone” isn’t where you want to be in an aggressive White deck. Its creature type isn’t relevant either. Only notable thing is that it can block Sylvan Advocate, however the creature it is attacking with, Sylvan Advocate will most likely eat up.

Visionary Augmenter - 1.5

4 mana for three bodies isn’t a bad deal, but the four slot for White already has so many good things. I just don’t see why you’d play this over Gideon, Ally of Zendikar.

Wispweaver Angel - 2

Can make some super sweet plays with a Gearhulk and Ever After. Triggering some of the Gearhulks twice can be pretty brutal. Or you can just reanimate two different/same Gearhulks with [card]Ever After[/card . . .  Probably better to just do that instead of getting this 4/4 Angel . . .  A man can live in Magical Christmas Land though!

Top 3 White Cards:

  1. Toolcraft Exemplar
  2. Fumigate
  3. Cataclysmic Gearhulk

All right folks, that’s all I have for today. Don’t forget I have an article coming out every day this week so make sure to check again tomorrow for more Kaladesh reviews! As always, thank you so much for reading and supporting my content.

Much love,

Ali
