We Are Young

There are a myriad of different midrange strategies in Modern, but most of them have revolved around {B}{G} variations. It’s hard to turn down a shell that starts with Thoughtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek, and Abrupt Decay, after all. From there you get your pick of splashing Red for Lightning Bolt, White for Path to Exile and Lingering Souls, or Blue for Snapcaster Mage and company. However, every now and again we see {B}{R} midrange decks put up results. Let’s take a look at what the most recent variations on this archetype look like:

Young Pyromancer
This style of midrange deck is a little more aggressive than the Green builds, and frequently features cards like Pack Rat, Blood Moon, and Goblin Rabblemaster to try to end games before your opponent really gets an opportunity to do much of anything. However, the core is largely similar to the {B}{G} builds. You’ve got Inquisition of Kozilek and Thoughtseize backed up by Lightning Bolt and Kolaghan’s Command, which form the foundation of your removal suite.

Beyond that, the similarities end. This deck utilizes Young Pyromancer as a way to get more aggressive. Rather than relying on something like Dark Confidant or Liliana of the Veil, this style of midrange deck wants to get on the board and start going wide. An early Young Pyromancer means that all of your discard spells, removal spells, and Faithless Lootings put your opponent further and further behind. Then you start following up with the likes of Bedlam Reveler to dig into burn spells and more Pyromancers to close the game out.

If you’re looking for a more aggressive slant on midrange, this is a good place to start. You’ve got a strong combination of disruption, card selection, and value engines. You have access to all the incredible White sideboard cards, and playing with Faithless Looting and Bedlam Reveler gives you a lot of looks at all of your techy singletons across the 75. There’s plenty of power, flexibility, and decision-making involved in building and playing this list, which is generally a recipe for success.
