Invigorating Modern

Reddit

Knight of the Reliquary is a card I’ve always been shocked not to see more of in Modern. Certainly, it’s a card that’s hurt by the presence of Abrupt Decay, Fatal Push, and Path to Exile as removal spells of choice, but the card is just a monstrously powerful threat that doubles as disruption, acceleration, and has the potential for a combo finish. The key is finding the right shell to surround Knight with. We’ve typically seen her in Naya beatdown or midrange decks and Bant Collected Company decks playing the Retreat to Coralhelm combo. This week SaffronOlive showed off a list that pushes the combo theme a little harder while providing a new and exciting angle of attack:

Knight of the Reliquary
This deck walks an interesting line between three different Modern archetypes. First, Bant Company, featuring powerful midrange creatures like Knight of the Reliquary and Spell Queller. Second, the Amulet of Vigor ramp decks, which utilize Selesnya Sanctuary and Amulet of Vigor alongside Primeval Titan and powerful utility lands to take over the game early on. Lastly, Hideaway land combo decks, which use Windbrisk Heights and Mosswort Bridge as a means of cheating giant monsters into play as early as the third turn of the game.

This deck can use efficient mana creatures like Noble Hierarch and Lotus Cobra to either ramp out Knight of the Reliquary or Primeval Titan early in the game and set up Hideaway land tricks. Alternatively, you can use them to just activate a Windbrisk Heights to put Emrakul or Primeval Titan into play. If games go longer, you can utilize Knight of the Reliquary or Primeval Titan to set up activations of hideaway lands to grind through multiple removal spells. Any time you hit Emrakul, the game just ends, but in the meantime you can chain Primeval Titans and Knights, each of which can find another Hideaway land. It’s also worth noting that both non-basic land tutors can find creature-lands like Mutavault, Stirring Wildwood, and Treetop Village to help ensure you have enough power or creatures to activate your Hideaway lands.

The last cute interaction in this deck is the combination of Amulet of Vigor and Retreat to Coralhelm. Amulet allows your Knights to find singleton copies of Selesnya Sanctuary and Vesuva to ramp into giant monsters and enables your Hideaway lands to enter the battlefield untapped. You can use this in conjunction with Retreat to Coralhelm to make your Knight of the Reliquary large enough to activate Mosswort Bridge while also giving yourself the means to activate multiple Mosswort Bridges to help ensure you find an Emrakul.
