Soldier On

Right now we’re seeing all manner of Ancient Tomb and Chalice of the Void decks in Legacy. Whether you’re trying to prey on Delver of Secrets decks with early Blood Moons or get your opponents dead with early Show and Tells or Reality Smashers, Ancient Tomb powers a huge chunk of the decks that don’t play Brainstorm. Today’s deck is no different, but has some additional prison pieces and is setup to beat up on opposing Ancient Tomb decks.

Preeminent Captain
This deck has a couple of exciting things going for it. Like most Ancient Tomb decks, Chalice of the Void is your preferred play on the first turn of the game. However, unlike other Ancient Tomb decks, you have both Suppression Field and Thalia, Guardian of Thraben as backups to lock Blue decks out of the game early. This high density of effects that can just end the game can make it enormously difficult for Brainstorm decks to even get to play.

On top of multiple cheap prison pieces, you have the ability to cheat Preeminent Captain into play on the first turn of the game. This card lets things get out of control very quickly, allowing you to cheat in creatures like Captain of the Watch and High Sentinels of Arashin onto the battlefield. Against creature decks, you even have the full set of Palace Jailers to ensure that your opponent struggles to piece together key combinations of cards while you can keep hitting land drops and deploying threats.

Thus far, we’ve focused on the power of quick prison pieces and large creatures, but the raw power of playing lots of creatures with first strike shouldn’t be underestimated. If your opponents are expecting to be able to attack with cards like Batterskull and Knight of the Reliquary, they may quickly find it difficult to find reasonable attacks.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this deck is the inclusion of the full set of High Sentinels of Arashin with zero copies of Enlistment Officer. This appears to be a concession to blocking Delver of Secrets, but depending on how many control decks you expect to face, you may want to revisit this decision and build in more ways to stay ahead on card advantage, even in the face of Terminus and Snapcaster Mage on removal spells.
