The Great Vizier

Reddit

Elves has been a powerful fringe deck in Modern for many years at this point, and it’s seen a ton of variants in that time. We’ve seen Abzan builds that feature Collected Company and Shaman of the Pack. We’ve seen builds with Forbidden Orchard and Beck // Call. We’ve seen wg versions with Lead the Stampede. However, the recent printing of Vizier of Remedies may be breathing new life into Elves combo in Modern. Let’s take a look:

Vizier of Remedies
On the whole, this is still a very typical Elves deck. You’re still looking to accelerate quickly with mana creatures. You can still get out of control as early as turn two if with Heritage Druid and Dwynen's Elite. You can still just aggro your opponent out with Elvish Archdruid and Ezuri activations. You can even still value your opponent out with Collected Company and Eternal Witness. The big difference? Now you’ve got an efficient combo that’s easy to assemble and ends the game on the spot.

The combo of choice is still Vizier of Remedies and Devoted Druid. Vizier allows your Druid to untap without paying the cost of putting a -1/-1 counter on it, which means you can generate infinite mana. The first place people tried to put this was in an Abzan Company shell, which is great, but that deck doesn’t typically play a bunch of mana sinks. Elves is already interested in playing some number of ways to spend a ton of mana, which makes it a natural home for this infinite mana combo.

As far as winning the game goes, you can go about it any number of ways once you’ve assembled infinite mana. The easiest way is to Chord for Duskwatch Recruiter to loop through your deck until you find Walking Ballista. Another option is to just tutor for Craterhoof Behemoth. Yet another option is to find Ezuri and activate him infinite times. There’s a lot of flexibility here depending on which effects you’re afraid your opponent might have.

On the whole, this seems like an exciting addition to a deck that was already powerful enough to win a handful of large Modern events. The ability to just Collected Company into a combo kill is absolutely absurd, particularly given that your deck forces them to start tapping out to deal with your board early and often if they don’t want to just get overrun.
