A Bonding Experience

Reddit

Battlebond was a really exciting set for many casual players, but it wasn't clear which, if any, cards would find homes in Legacy. This week we're featuring a deck that looks to go bigger than most decks in Legacy with the help of a new Battlebond creature. Let's take a look:

Arena Rector
This deck is really interesting. It's incredibly focused on doing exactly two things. First, ramping into an Academy Rector or Arena Rector. Second, sacrificing it and taking over the game with some giant effect. Your acceleration includes Ancient Tomb and City of Traitors into a signet, as well as Mox Diamond. These cards enable to you accelerate into a fast Rector or a cheap disruptive effect like Chalice of the Void or Trinisphere. Another exciting aspect of this deck is the inclusion of Recruiter of the Guard to help you select which Rector is appropriate for the giving matchup.

Once you resolve a Rector, you can sacrifice them with Phyrexian Tower or kill all the creatures with Toxic Deluge. Once you do, there are a number of huge haymakers that you can cheat into play. As far as enchantments go, foremost among these is Overwhelming Splendor, which shuts off an astonishing amount of the format, particularly when combined with Curse of Death's Hold. Out of your sideboard are options like Leyline of Sanctity and Leyline of the Void, depending on what you're expecting your opponents to be doing. As far as Planeswalkers go, Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker and Ugin, the Spirit Dragon are the two obvious choices, and they are more than capable of burying your opponents in card advantage. This is particularly true because most decks aren't well-prepared to fight against Planeswalkers with a high loyalty like either of these two.

One of the last interesting choices is the inclusion of Collective Brutality over something like Cabal Therapy. Both cards are capable of making sure that your Rector dies, but Cabal Therapy has the potential of coming online a little faster and being a little more skill-testing, while Collective Brutality is a little more flexible and consistent.

If you're looking for an off-the-wall combo-esque deck, this seems like an interesting take on Academy Rector and Arena Rector. There have been a number of other variations utilizing cards like Evolutionary Leap, but this one is certainly the one that's most aggressive about getting an early Rector and generating an enormous advantage.
