A New Challenger Emerges

Reddit

Aggressive decks aren’t the only ones to pick up new and exciting tools from Hour of Devastation. In fact, one of the most exciting cards in the set is Champion of Wits; a card that helps to power up some of the interesting graveyard interactions from Shadows over Innistrad which we haven’t seen much of in recent months. The addition of a pseudo Faithless Looting to these decks seems like it may be exactly what they needed to make a comeback in Hour of Devastation Standard:

Champion of Wits
This deck is very reminiscent of some of the Temur Emerge decks we saw back when Emrakul was legal. The objective here is effectively the same as it was for that deck. You spend your early turns sculpting your graveyard with Vessel of Nascency, Grapple with the Past, and Champion of Wits. Your goal is then to use Sitchwing Skaab, Champion of Wits, and Prized Amalgam to stabilize the board and set up for your Elder Deep-Fiends.

One advantage that this deck has is a high density of impactful threats, thanks to Traverse the Ulvenwald and Grapple with the Past. The idea is that, once you start casting Elder Deep-Fiends, you’ll be able to keep your opponent locked down until you can attack them to death with your assorted Zombies and Eldrazi.

You even get the ability to play singleton copies of high-impact haymakers like Ishkanah, Grafwidow and Glorybringer to swing particular matchups or board states into your favor. You even have access to Kozilek's Return to punish decks like Monument that will try to go wide against you to trump your Elder Deep-Fiends. If you’re looking for something with a lot of interesting angles and a very consistent engine, this seems like a good place to be in this Standard format.
