Aggressive Driving

Reddit

The baseline deck of the format heading into the Pro Tour Weekend was an aggressive White-Red vehicles deck. This deck focused on utilizing the power of cards like Depala, Pilot Exemplar, and Smuggler's Copter to get aggressive starts early, grind out card advantage later on, and had the flexibility to shift their role in post-sideboard games. However, despite being a great deck and a reasonable portion of the field, vehicles was not the White-Red deck that was on top of the standings at the end of the swiss. That was Makis Matsoukas with an interesting take on Tokens.

The core of this deck is very similar to the White-Red Vehicles deck. The difference is that it doesn’t bother with the expensive cards like Depala, Pilot Exemplar and Fleetwheel Cruiser. Instead, this is a more aggressive take the focuses on going wide and overwhelming the opponent with raw efficiency.

It all starts at the one-drop slot. Most vehicles decks are playing Toolcraft Exemplar and Thraben Inspector to turn it on. Not as many are playing Inventor's Apprentice, and none of them are playing Servo Exhibition. That may seem like a small change, but it means you have more copies of aggressive one-drops and more early artifacts to make sure they’re hitting hard. Additionally, this early aggression combines better with cards like Pia Nalaar and Gideon, Ally of Zendikar, since you’re more likely to be able to force through the last few points of damage before your opponent can really get anything going.

Reckless Bushwhacker is particularly good for this function, since you can pretty easily imagine a curve of Toolcraft Exemplar on turn one, Servo Exhibition on turn two, and Inventor's Apprentice plus Reckless Bushwhacker on turn three. There are a lot of decks that are just going to die to that kind of start, regardless of what kind of interaction and sweepers they may have on their second and third turn. If you’re looking to race the Aetherworks Marvel decks and get them dead on turn three or four, this may just be the best way to do it.
