Cast through Time #19 – Commander Demander!

Reddit

Everyone is talking about Commander this week! What an exciting time to be a part of the Commander community. It certainly seems that the preconstructed Commander decks have been a great success. Wizards of the Coast has tried to promote the “Summer of Multiplayer” for the past two years, and they finally knocked it out of the park.

Let’s tune in.

Format Staples

Format staples are my favorite shows and the shows I believe are the most important for someone interested in Magic: The Gathering and podcasts to be listening to week in and week out. You want these in your 75.

CrazyTalk #14 – The Threshold

Running time 2 hours 52 minutes

  • KYT, Frank, and Alex are joined by David Caplan, co-creator and pilot of the Canadian Threshold deck, which until the printing of Mental Misstep was a competitive deck in Legacy.
  • The Five:
    • How did you get into Legacy?
      • David started out as a Vintage-only player until a friend of his convinced him to play Canadian Threshold, which David claims played a lot like a Vintage deck.

    • What’s your favorite Magic card?
    • What do you want to be known for in the Magic community?
      • David would like to be known for his ability to play every format. He wants to be known as a good all-around player.

    • If you got into a bar fight and could pick one member of the Magic Community to fight with you, who would it be?
      • Chris Cavanaugh

    • What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done?
      • In the last month (prior to recording the show), David moved to Ottawa and decided to focus on Limited by grinding MTGO queues for a month straight, culminating in a huge tournament win, which qualified him for the MTGO championship and for Worlds in San Francisco.

    • David describes Canadian Threshold to the guys. He reviews the card choices and evolution of the deck.
    • KYT and Alex also discuss some of the hilarity and fun they had at the Canadian Magic Tour: Ottawa.
    • The guys spend a good bit of time discussing how to play with and how to play against the card Fact or Fiction, which is interesting. I know that I would have no idea how to play against that card correctly if I found myself faced with it.
    • Frank wants to know what everyone thinks about the new cards available in the Commander decks for play in Legacy.
    • Alex’s cards of note are Flusterstorm and Chaos Warp.
    • David drops out of the show, and Jonathan joins in. The discussion moves on to the price of Commander singles, the price of the Commander decks, and the war that The Eh Team declared last week against brick-and-mortar stores.
    • Bringing the show back to Legacy talk, Jonathan provides us with a walk-through of the very interesting-sounding Mana-less Dredge deck.

The Eh Team #40 – The Behoover

Running time 1 hour 48 minutes

    Show notes:

    • For Episode 40, KYT, Jesse, and Jay are joined by Don Wiggins, from the online store Don’s Magic and Sundry. The guys learn how Don started in his online business, how he prices cards, and how he made his way onto the Wizards Play Network. The Team shares what they’ve been working on lately: Jesse continues to brew his Aggro Pod deck, Jay’s Game Day with Croz Control, and after they all log their Banned & Restricted predictions, KYT describes his experience at the Canadian Magic Tour: Ottawa leg (spoiler alert: he came in 10th, and still had time to be a star commentator!)
    • Don’s Altered Art Section
    • The Road to WPN, Part 1
    • A Case Against Speculation

Horde of Notions #10 – Aquatic Ass-Whuppin

Running time 2 hours 24 minutes

Inside the Deck – Drafting Tips & Commander Previews

Running time 16 minutes

  • Inside the Deck kicks off with a close look at the mechanics of drafting.
  • Jack Grannan and Steve McCarthy walk us through the concept of evaluating commons by discussing a few from New Phyrexia.
  • Jack and Steve also join the show to discuss the new Commander decks. Did you guys pick these up?
  • Once again, the quality of Inside the Deck is really great! This episode was slightly less exciting than last week’s, which had great on-the-scene footage from the SCG Invitational, but was still solid.

The Magic Show #233 – Commander, M12 and the Sad State of Standard

Running time 13 minutes

  • Evan Erwin kicks off The Magic Show with an announcement for SCG Mobile, Star City Games’ recent iPhone app (Android version to be released at a later date).
  • Moving onto the new Commander decks being released by WotC, Evan reveals that preorder sales for these decks are reaching a level unseen since Zendikar (which had “Priceless Treasures” hidden in random packs, if you recall). I have to admit, that is incredibly impressive.
  • Evan also makes the point that WotC would be foolish to miss out on the opportunity to line up another Commander product launch for summer 2012. I think that might be a little premature, as we don’t yet know how many Commander newbies are going to continue to play the format once the initial hype dies down, but he may very well be right. I’m thrilled about these decks. As a matter of fact, on my lunch break today, I went down to my LGS to pick up the five I preordered back in April at a seriously nice price.
  • Magic 2012 is also put under the microscope (those parts that we’ve seen at this point anyway). Evan examines the new keywords and abilities we’ve been shown through official previews.
  • Finally, Evan beats the drum once again calling for the death of Stoneforge Mystic. Now that we know that the DCI has banned both Stoneforge Mystic and Jace, the Mind Sculptor, I will take this opportunity to ask now: How do you guys feel about the latest Banned and Restricted list?

Monday Night Magic #264 – Tom’s Been Banned (and apparently the entire MTGCast Network as well)

Running time 1 hour

    Show notes:

    • We have the B squad hosts with Eric being joined by Adena, so we summoned the Djinn from his bottle.
    • We discuss MTGO turning 9 years old and about the next Magic Cruise 4. Of course, we get to the big news of the day the announcement of the Standard bans and the explanation about them. We cannot skip the MTGO Pauper ban even though we are short on Knowledge of the format. Eric reviews GP Kansas City and LSV’s Top 8 draft. Lastly, we touch on the Community victory in the Erik Friborg’s Memorial MTGO Community Cup.
    • What Have We Been Playing?
    • Eric talks a bit about Commander.

Untapped #14 – Old Arnold and Tyler Durden FTW

Running time 1 hour 34 minutes

Yo! MTG Taps! #69 – Casual Friday

Running time 1 hour 9 minutes

  • With Joey absent because of SCG Open obligations, Bigheadjoe has Adam Styborski on the show to geek out about the new cards available only in the new Commander preconstructed decks.
  • Tune in for sure to hear the guys brew some interesting card interactions for both Commander and Legacy formats.

The Sideboard

The Sideboard includes shows that may or may not record every week but are quality podcasts that you may be interested in. At a minimum, I will provide the show notes, but in the case of better-than-usual episodes will provide recap or commentary. You don’t run them in every deck, but they are often a great metagame call.

The Avant-Card Show #38 – Commander Decks and Lifegain in Multiplayer

Running time 2 hours 5 minutes

    Show notes:

    • Your hosts welcome Andrew back and discuss the ins and outs of lifegain in multiplayer—when to play it, and when it will put the heat on you. Also, we go over the list of new Commanders from the Commander decks! And Danica Patrick does her best Debbie impression.

The Hardcast #16

Running time 1 hour 5 minutes

    Show notes:

    • Another GP and another successful run by Team CFB with Paulo making the final 4 and Owen making another top 8 and now is level 6 for the season already.
    • Another run of GP’s and Paulo wins and X-Owen makes top 8 and Nagoya with LSV making the top 8 then topping it off with winning GPKC.
    • Talk about Nagoya and the whole experience
    • Jace and Stoneforge banned!!! What does it really mean for not only Standard but for Magic?
    • M:12 – Thoughts so far
    • http://www.wizards.com/magic/tcg/article.aspx?x=mtg/tcg/magic2012/cig#
    • Commander Cards, what do you like?
    • Cube Question of the week: How many of phyrexian mana symbol cards should you add to your cube?
    • FNM Deck of the week — WW / Affinity / Tempered Steel

The Mana Pool #183 – Drowning in Previews

Running time 2 hours 40 minutes

    Show notes:

    • No really. They dropped a TON of stuff on us since our last recording. Apparently I was even allergic to some of it. Well, that or nerds, not sure which. But yeah, we're trying desperately to keep up, so much so that we enlisted the aid of the ever-awesome Eric of Many Names once again! He's going to help us out with the new M12 cards, the new Commander cards, and the other cards in the Commander decks. Mike also guides us through a relatively painless Rules Update. And of course, we knocked out a few of the many emails we've gotten since the last episode. And now, a lot of links to all this stuff:
    • Eric on Twitter
    • M12 previews
    • Commander previews
    • Commander decklists
    • Rules update

Mana Screwed #50 – Special: Banned/Restricted List Announcement

Running time 32 minutes

  • Tangent, Jack, Charlotte, and Adena from Horde of Notions discuss the update to the Banned/Reserved list as of June 19, 2011!

MTGCast Interviews the Men of Magic, Presenting: #48 – Charlotte Sable

Running time 1 hour 13 minutes

    Show notes:

    • In this episode of the MTGCast Interviews the Men of Magic, Presenting series, the Host(s) interviews: Charlotte Sable
    • This weeks Men of Magic interview is with Level 2 judge Charlotte Sable. Find out what it takes to be a judge. The challenges of moving up in the program. More thoughts on the newest adventure of Serra’s Angels podcast, and more!

Pauper to the People #13 – Wing That Mutha!

Running time 1 hour 47 minutes

    Show notes:

    • When deck plans fall apart, the brave wing it. Listen to Tuna and Chris talk about revisions to the ban list in Standard and Pauper, revise the Pauper Player’s Toolkit, discuss Commander pre-cons, and have an earnest talk about the politics of kitchen table magic. Enjoy your ear candy. This is Pauper to the People.
    • Thanks to our amazing community for the suggestions/revisions to the Toolkit. You are all the lone lighthouse that guides our derelict ship of a podcast to safe harbor. Then you kill the crew and burn the hull for warmth.

Raiders of Teferi’s Puzzle Box #27 – Reconstructive Surgery to Make You Look Like John Goodman

Running time 1 hour 2 minutes

    Show notes:

    • Have you ever been in a crowded place where something stinks, and the whole time you’re paranoid it’s you?
    • This time on Raiders we force ourselves to talk about the time we killed a homeless hitchhiker on the back from a p.t.q. Sure you’ve heard stories of flat tires and people oversleeping thier alarm, but when was the last time you heard a grown man cry in remorse on a podcast? That’s right you wont be getting this story on M.N.M. (although there is plenty of goodness on that cast).
    • While listening to Scrubland on my ‘dre-beats’ headphones streaming from my ipad 2, I realized that life is rough. Think about it… there are people out there that only have the origanal ipad.
    • I continue to work on my profesional puppetering with the hopes that someday I will brodcast each podcast on the mtgcast network via puppetry on you tube. Check it out.
    • BTW we also talk about our real magic exploits grinding some ptq’s, and standard as we see it now and where it goes before somebody does something silly like…. oh i don’t know ban a plainswalker.
    • Hope you enjoy this episode as much as Otwell has been taking down tourneys.

Road Warrior Otwell #117 – OP Lays Down the Banhammer! Caw-Blade, Get Out of the Pool

Running time 11 minutes

    Show notes:

    • The 3 Branches of WotC — R&D, Organized Play, and Brand — had the fight of the year. It looks like OP won with a concession from Brand and R&D. It *HAD* to happen to make Magic viable again.

    • Scars of Mirrodin Block Constructed, Extended, Legacy, Vintage
      • No changes

Scrubland #44 – Give ’em the Ole One-Two Punch

Running time 1 hour 16 minutes

    Show notes:

    • Two, count em, TWO cards have been banned in STD, and the Scrubland really has some mixed feelings about it all. But never fear! Chris Otwell has flown himself across the country to help us sort through our emotions during this complicated time in our lives… or just drink some beers. We weren’t really sure to be honest. Join the Scrubland crew as we explore the reasons behind R&D’s actions in great detail, and ultimately give our opinions on just what brought us to this point. It’s another week of no holds barred discussion folks, WELCOME TO THE SCRUBLAND!

In Development

Shows in development are newer podcasts. I will keep you guys up to date on new shows as they arrive on the scene, at a minimum providing show notes and possibly providing recap and analysis (I'm more likely to start writing about new shows once they've made it through five episodes and have begun to hit their stride). Consider these shows the cards you play with for the first time at the prerelease: You are excited to try them out but no one is sure how much play they will see.

RTFC Podcast #4 – Killing Time

Running time 55 minutes

    Show notes:

    • With no major updates or advances to any Format, Phil, Kirk and Tony discuss alternate card games, silly standard deck ideas, and generally waste an hour of your time.

    Show notes:

    • In this episode Wally and Trevor discuss the awful terrible decision that WOTC made to ban Stoneforge Mystic and Jace, the Mind Sculptor. After we get over our pain (really still hasn’t happened) we go on to discuss some new decklists. Hint: play Exarch Twin… We wrap up by hitting up some early M2012 spoilers then discuss how awesome Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 is and Trevor recounts how Koth Archenemy has been the hardest boss ever and how Karn cheats like a mother with his turn one Darksteel Colossus on the play!
    • Check out this link above to watch Aaron Forsythe talk himself in circles as he attempts to explain the idiotic banning of SFM and Jace TMS.

MTG Brainstorm #4

Running time 37 minutes

    Show notes:

    • This week on the Brainstorm we talk about the banning of JTMS and Stoneforge Mystic. We have our differences on the banning of these cards but it had to be done. We also talk about DOTP on the 360 and what we like about it but thanks to skype the show got cut short but Tyrone finshed the show…..good job Tyrone you can do something right.
    • We are still looking for some comments, email, and any info you guys want to throw at us to put on the show so please hit us up on Facebook and Twitter.
    • Coming in the following weeks Mtgbrainstorm will be holding a online contest so please check back in a few weeks and we will have all the information you need on these contests.

Public Enemies #2 – Blind Rage!

Running time 56 minutes

    Show notes:

    • Note from last show: TheGoatnapper on twitter said the reason Survival was banned was because it was broken after mystical tutor was banned and vengevine was printed.
    • Possible topics to discuss:

    Show notes:

    • In this episode, we start by going over the Commander decks and M12 spoilers, courtesy of mtgsalvation.com. Then we jump into the current FNM level Standard metagame and (even though we tried not to) ended up talking a lot about Jace, The Mind Sculptor (better than all) and Stoneforge Mystic. Then, we go over a little coverage from the MTGO Community Cup (go Community team!!!). From there we progress to talking about Modern and what we expect from the format if it gets the official nod from WotC. We finish up with a short Commander deck highlight with a Reaper King Deck piloted by a player at our local shop.

So Many Insane Plays #1

Running time 1 hour 38 minutes

  • Kevin Cron and Stephen Menendian bring us a podcast focused specifically on the Vintage or Type 1 format.
  • After introductions, the show starts off with a discussion of power-level errata, which are errata changes to the Oracle text of cards. These changes are intended to restore the cards to their intended power level in the event that cards are overpowered as printed.
  • Kevin and Stephen also discuss the new Commander product from WotC and the unprecedented policy of printing new Eternal-legal cards that are not available in a regularly scheduled set (which means they also cannot be acquired in booster packs).
  • Cards printed only in the Commander precons that the guys feel could have an impact on the Vintage metagame are:
  • The show wraps up with Kevin and Stephen considering the current Vintage metagame, with particular attention paid to Tezzeret-based artifact strategies.
