Very valid point though; I would love to see some new cards; even if some of my old favorites arn’t back again.
SO much for my suntail hawk collection.

Really, there are only about 120 classic cards that should be in each core set. The rest are simply throw-ins from recent expansions.
Replacing those throw-ins with brand new cards is more excting/fun for everyone I think.

Lets not get hasty guys. The information we have is scarce and vague. Cards with names like Suntail Hawk are perfect for this set. I think something like that has enough White Flavor to make it in.

2010 IS 11th.
The core set format has changed. Every year they’ll have a set with the year in the title and that will be the core set.

I am actually very excited for this new set. I am sad though that the Standard turnover will be increased much faster, because of the new sets coming out every year. That is the only really bad thing I see coming out of this set, but the fact that most of these cards are new, I am amazingly excited bout. I am tired of seeing some of the same cards over and over again in the different sets. BRING ON 2010. I can’t wait for the release

Standard turnover is also changed, as there will be two core sets legal at a time (three between summer and fall?), and the turnover will happen all at once every fall.

Yeah except on turn five you are only on one mana….if you have any left in your hand. Having no lands at the start of your 5th turn is a huge disadvantage. Just my opinion :)

Edited for clarity: 3 months after a Core set release 2 cores WILL still be legal for 90 days. Not sure why, just adds confusion in my opinion. Thanks for the correction.

That’s incorrect. There will be a three month period when both 2010 and 2011 are standard. It won’t be until the fall after 2011 releases that 2010 will cycle out. It’ll be that way every year now. And to comment on earlier comments, only 8 cards that have been printed in every core set will be hitting 2010, and only about 50% of the cards will be reprints, which include the original five planeswalkers, Black Knight, Birds of Paradise, Unsummon, Nightmare, and Shivan Dragon, among others. I doubt Suntail Hawk will make it in.

@ixidorofice: Stifle doesn’t target the land, it targets the triggered effect, so no, Shroud won’t prevent Stifle from targeting the effect.

@Reinhart: stop giving false information. When 2010 comes in, 10th will go out, but Lorwyn/Shadowmoor and Alara will still be legal. On that note, Lorwyn/Shadowmoor will go out with the entrance of Zendikar. There will still be two blocks legal, and for a three month period every year there will be two core sets that are legal.

Ahh I didnt know about the 3 month limbo thing.
In the broader sense.. I still am correct that 2010 ushers out 10th (minus the 3 month period) and 2011 will usher out 2010.
But yes.. reading more closely there will be two legal in standard for 3 months. Thanks for making it confusing wizards!

just to throw it out there i heard they are taking off the mana burn rule… that just makes golden lotus that much freakin better lets say u can only use 6 of the mana now u dont get burned for three THAT THING IS SICK!!!!

Not that I really want to entertain this wild accusation but.. the only thing I could see happening is getting rid of the mana burn at END OF PHASES rule.. which is pretty confusing IMO. I actually played a big part of my early magic career having mana not burn until end of turn and it was fine. Im sure someone could exploit it if they thought hard enough about it :)

mana abilities cannot be countered and I belive that adding 9 mana to your mana pool is a mana ability

i think that drastically overhauling the main mechanics of gameplay (specifically the behaviors of each phase and the suggested implementation of the “battlefield” concept) is a ballsy/dangerous move for wizards, considering the fact that there are so many ppl that started playing during some of the earlier sets and quit as wizards applied more and more changes and more and more complex rules to the game. maybe wizards is in a tight spot and are losing players right now and are trying to appeal to a younger age of players and change their demographic to a more open minded generation( no offense old ppl). as nothing more than players of the game lacking the insight that someone in wizards R&D would have, we can do nothing more than either sit and wait patiently or start an underground movement of so called “vintage/original” players. the future of magic is coming whether we like it or not and its up to you to decide whether or not to kick off the new age by suicide or by hosting a 48 hour drafting marathon after buying 14 boxes of magic 2010. yipeee!!!! lookout credit card, here comes blackborder.com!!!!

@Reinhart: It hasn’t been confirmed that mana burn will no longer be in effect. Rumor has it that mana will still empty at the end of each phase, however it won’t cause mana burn.

@jason: Stifle wouldn’t be targeting the mana ability, that would be a useless combo. Stifle would be targeting the comes into play effect, so that you don’t have to sacrifice three untapped lands.

@tracktf2010: Rod of Ruin and Giant Growth are also staples that have been in every core set.

But eliminate Mana burn? Knowing that its there and planning around it requires strategy, overpaying mana costs would hurt you that you wont have as much mana to spend later that turn but then with the golden lotusm you could use only 7 of the mana without getting hit for not planning to use the other 2.

On another note we could now play Protogenisis on turn 5, if you dont have non-targeted removal , you are screwed.

In regards to the so called “mana burn” rule. I really cant see that happening. Especially with cards like Citadel of Pain in the game.

I actually like the new dual lands, they’re pretty well designed. You can’t drop them turn one, but you usually aren’t generating colored mana from a painland that turn anyway. I’ll be picking up a playset for the colors I’ll be playing. :)

Land – Uncommon
When ForestPlains comes into play, choose either Forest or Plains. ForestPlains becomes a basic land of that type.

I noticed that Undead Slayers ability is exile a skeleton zombie or vampire….is exile the new word for destroy or remove from game?

For those that don’t know, the new rules have been posted. Biggest changes:
Damage no longer uses the stack.
Mana now empties at the end of every step and every phase.
Mana burn no longer exists.
Removed from game zone is now exile zone.

All of the other changes don’t really do much to gameplay. These rules change a few things though.

Cards like Mogg Fanatic can’t be sacrificed after damage has been dealt, and cards like Nantuko Husk can’t sacrifice creatures to pump itself after damage has been assigned.
Cards like Radah, Heir to Keld aren’t that great anymore. Now you have to use that 2 red mana before blockers are declared. Although if you don’t, at least you won’t take damage for it.
The exile zone is now still in the game, so cards like Glittering Wish can’t get those cards back for you.

so let me get this straight, Exile means that its destroyed and rmved from the game… but the exile zone is still in the game? confusing right there…. and if damage no longer goes on the stack, that means i can’t use one of my favorite moves… Attack with Viashino Slaughermaster. Opponent chooses not to block, then i pump it with a Giant Growth for an inside 8 damage? SO i would have to use Giant Growth and Brute Force BEFORE blockers are declared?

And what the heck is up with this “enters the Battlefield” crap. I thought it was a lot cooler for it to say “comes into play”…

You may still do that Gilligan-esque because there is an assign blockers step at that time when they wish to not assign blockers you may choose to pump them. after the assign blockers step the damage is dealt and combat phase is over

Dual lands are simply stinky!
No first turn spell is unacceptable for White (Lions???) and Green (Elves).
That lands are useful in two colors decks only, with no other non basic land.
In Italy, we would call them “carte piombo!” (leaded cards!) cause of their slowlyness!

@Kamandi74: I realize you like being able to play a dual land and choose to use the white or green mana the turn it comes into play, but realistically, you can either play a forest or a plains and then play a lion or elf first turn. The new dual lands increase the second turn play, just like the dual lands from the Shadowmoor block.

I know people are creaming over this Golden Lotus. I have reason to believe it will be rarely played, because yes, you have a powerful creature or enchantment out 5th turn, but odds are the opponent runs SOME sort of solution. By 5th turn if they splash any white they have a wrath with your name on it. So, Golden Lotus will be another useless rare. It’ll only be good late game. If that.

Y’know, the more i think about it, the more i remember that there’s something called house rules. I for one, won’t be quitting magic. Yeah, i’ll have to retool 90 percent of my decks, but oh well. I’ve been playing for 10 years, almost 11. Something like this was bound to happen.

Lick your wounds, whine a bit, but keep on playing, even if it’s just with house rules.

The second turn play with this lands is heavily conditioned from the presence of a BASIC land on turn one, elseway they come in play tapped. This is simply boring because you are forced to play NO other non basic land, not even filters.
The shadowmoor lands, instead, come into play untapped in EVERY condition of play, even if you are in mana screw or under the effects of a land destruction deck. Filters, additionally, change the mana from other land too, facilitating the double specific mana costs play.
Example: would you hold a hand with JUST ONE of this duals, a treetop village, and 2 Birds of paradise? Wolud you accept the risk of loosing TWO turns of play?
Filters have the same problem, but their useability with OTHER non basic lands make the risk affortable.

That’s my opinion.

We are living/playing through the most mana-base friendly era in MTG history.
The new dual lands are inferior in every way. However, that is intentional. Making five-color decks was never meant to be easy.
Expect lands in the near future to be similar to the Mirrodin/Kamigawa era lands.

I have played with the new rules, I don’t mind any of the rule changes except for the no mana burn.

Right now, ONLY COMBAT DAMMAGE uses the stack, all other dammage is tied to an ability or spell and happens when the spell resolves.

Example.. If I used shock on a mogg fanatic, the defending player would have to sack it in response to the spell on the stack. You could never let shock resolve put the 2 dammage on the stack and then sack it. Why should combat dammage be different.

This is because dammage done by spells and abilities NEVER used the stack. You could respond to the ability or spell but NEVER the dammage done by it.

So why would combat dammage be different. I understand that it changes the stratagy of the battle but the fact that regular dammage and COMBAT dammage resolved at different
speeds was more confusing for me. Now dammage is all the same.

No mana burn is really annoying as now I don’t have to worry about my elf deck producing too much mana and killing me. It now make “pristess of titania” just that much better.
I can now tap it for 7 and only use 3 mana and no longer need a SINK for the excess mana.

You can respond while the spell is on the stack – but now, once blockers are declaired – combat damage happens immediately – this kills spell optimization and will make a noob aggro player with a lot of money look the same as a pro player with a lot of money since you know have to commit to a pump spell before blockers are declaired.

Not to mention that your example is retarded, having shock resolve on the mogg fanatic serves absolutely no purpose, but blocking a 2/2 with mogg fanatic and then sacrificing him does – it makes sense that sources of damage should go on the stack, combat and spells.

oh, and first trike. You used to be able to say “after first trike combat damage on the stack, I’ll deal ____ dmg to your guy to kill it” that trick is gone too.

Magic has never been a game for retards, reading and thinking are requirements – and yes, god forbid, knowing some of the damn rules. How many people go to regionals each year? and they all know this shit. I don’t know who Wizards is catering to, but it’s definately not the people who have been giving them money all these years.

The game SHOULD be easy for even a beginner to be good at,who says you must have played for da da da years to be able to deal 20 dam to an opponent? The changes were made to make the game seem less like,I dont know,a card game? Your supposed to be able to get a mental picture of whats going on in the game,and I think the changes help that. Who cares if you cant opt to sacrifice your mogg fanatic? just dont block with him,yeesh. Not like he still cant take out a bagillion creatures. My friend and I are new to Magic, having started in the Shards block. Would it be possible for you to identify which cards are reprints, perhaps with an asterisk, so as to differentiate them from the roughly 50% which will be new?

I started in revised so pre-Sixth ed. Before the MASSIVE rule changes.

You say that sources, spells and abilities for dammage should use the stack. My anwser is, yes it should and the NEW rules and not the old rules reflect that.

Spells and abilities use the stack but the dammage done by them does not. This is the current form and the reason it was not changed.

Combat sources are technically on the stack when blockers get declared. That is why when you remove a creature from combat before dammage is dealt, it does NO LONGER deal its combat dammage. The source of the dammage is no longer there. If I deal lethal dammage to a creature, how is he still alive to use an ability. Just like if i kill a player, can he still play spells once he’s dead?

I have been to PTQ’s and reginals many times and I am not a new player.

As for combat tricks, you can still use them AFTER blocker are declared but BEFORE dammage is dealt. You just no longer have the ability to ABUSE the stack in those conditions.
This does not kill the use of strategy, it just changes it to a different form.

People had to adapt to the 6th ed. rules at that time and we will adapt for the new M10 rules. The new M10 rules have just fixed some loop-holes, while at the same time opened new combos and opertunities that are now legal to do. And some more broken than before.

They have made the game easier to play but an experienced player will always win more ofter than a new player.

Can you please keep your arguments consistent. Are you advocating for the stack or against it. You say you’re mad that combat dammage will no longer use the stack then
argue that it is not fair to use the stack if 2 mages shoot at each other…

All I was saying, a creature should be ALIVE to use it’s ability. Either use it before damage is dealt or use it IF he survives the blow.

In my opinion they should have kept the Mana burn rule or modified it to still have some kind of draw back. Because now cards like “preistess of titania”, “the channeller”, the coldsnap enchantment “cumulative :add a R to your mana pool”.
There is no draw back now. No need for sinks. It now make some over looked old cards better now. I’ll also have to disable my mana burn deck now.

One (I) could make the argument that combat damage on the stack makes more sense. Let’s say mogg fanatic is a taliban terrorist. He gets in to a fight with a 2/2 navy seal. the navy seal stabs him, but before death – he blows himself up.
That scenario makes sense to me.

The point is that you can’t talk about the stack not making sense when it a. is a defining characteristic of magic and b. isn’t completely realistic to begin with. I mean god, everyone knows that Dominaria doesn’t actually exist, it’s so fake…

Assuming that damage from spells doesn’t go on the stack, as you say, then that damage should go on the stack – so that there’s consistancy, instead of 2 inconsistancies.

You should also read how the blocker step works more carefully, damage happens IMMEDIATELY (split second shit here) after blockers are declaired.

I’m with you on the last bit. How can fat magic players get a workout if they don’t feel the mana burn?

Well I think we’ll be butting heads for a little while, this is a battle of opinion.

I would like combat damage to NOT use the stack like spells and abilities so they stay the same.

You would like the damage from spells and abilities to use the stack like Combat damage is currently.

I will agree that there should be consistency.

With the new rules, if we would like our little Mogg to keep his currrent ability available. They could errate it to “Sack, deal 1 damage or if Mogg dies from combat damage, it deals 1 damage.”

They have made a similar ability (i forget the goblin’s name) but “when said goblin dies, it deals 3 damage”

I see this latter ability to resemble more your terrorist example.

If lethal dammage is given, it should be like instant death in real world comparisons. I believe that you should not have TIME to “flick a switch” but rather have a “heart trigger”
that would trigger upon death.

i dislike the new combat system a lot (well technically old, cuz its almost the same as pre-sixth edition). and i also dont like the no mana burn. it just seems to make things funner

and btw, braid of fire (cumulative upkeep add R to your mana pool) is now almost useless because the mana will empty at the
end of your upkeep, and not be there during your main phase and you will only be able to use it to cast instant spells or activated abilities at instant speed

As Wizards stated, cards come, cards go. It’s all in the nature of such a card game. They even went further to site examples…such as the Mogg Fanatic being now essentially useless since you can’t 2-for-1 with him anymore, but the Wake Thrasher is now DOUBLY powerful because of the lack of mana burn.

One more small thing,

I have read over the new rules and examples from Wizards magic site. The blocking phase is still the same as the current way.

You can still use combat tricks after blocker are declared, you just can’t respond to the assigned amount of damage and when the dammage is dealt.

So really only 1 thing changed. Damage is assigned and dealt right away with no time to respond but all the rest is the same. I can still pump, bounce, shrink, kill or use any
instant cards or abilities after blockers and blocking order is chosen. The only this that will take some getting used to will be regenerate as this ability will have to be
activated before damage is dealt as you will no longer be able to respond to the damage.

braid of fire (cumulative upkeep add R to your mana pool) is now more powerful than you think. Red shock/bolt decks can use their spells during the upkeep. Or even using the
shadowmoor red enchantment “Pay X, discard a acrd with casting cost of X to deal X damage to target creature or player”. By turn 6 you could be getting 5 free R mana each upkeep for instants and abilities with no fear of mana burning yourself to death.

I will add this card to my Ambassador Latiquis deck with the “double your upkeep” card to add rediculous amouns of mana with no fear of mana burning myself to death. And “sink” it to mill peoples decks even quicker.

Okay, everyone just needs to adapt to the kid friendly rules. Changing subject completely, what cards are you hoping for reprint?

I think the new damage rules make sense in combat. Think about it this way. you could never respond to damage done by activated abilities and spells, correct? You could only respond to the actual spell being cast or ability being used. Think of attacking as an activated ability that all creatures without defender have. And blocking the same way. So things can be done in response to the attacking or blocking, but not in response to the damage they deal.

That is what I have been saying.

Also, Golden lotus is a hoax.

Also, The PTQ in my area falls on the release of M10 so it will be insteresting how much people bought at the pre-release.

uhm, 2010 gunna suck major balls imo, only some of the cards reprinted will be good, like BOP, the planeswalkers, white/blk knight, and maybe some other cards? my cousins and uncle are all T.O.’s and i think they will hate the new set, i know i do, i wont quit, but magic was never about who had more money like yugayho and pokemon >:(, now all these noobs who have money can just go out and buy playsets of expensive cards, throw them together, and win, magic is becomin a nsr game, thnx a whole lot wizrd, hope u burn >:D

I don’t see why people say that whoever has the most money wins.
1. No mana burn,
Affects the game but not too much, if they use too much, they will have less to play with later that turn.
2. no more tricks from stacking combat dammage.
I find that this will require more strategy instead of less becuase there will be less of a surprise factor,so planning will be more required.

3. nothing else really changed except names.

I really believe that people are over reacting and that the game will not change that much. This is a love tap compared to the changes they did in sixth-ed.

MTG has always had an element of requiring money in constructed – and nothing will really take that away, unless they print a set where its the commons that own – like back in wild mongrel days.

@igotnomojo what else makes you not like the set because after a while you see dauntless escort and mogg fanatic will be gone the later very soon i believe unless reprinted in m10. i mean wizards wont print cards in the future that wont fi their own rules right so as for standard/extended it will be only a matter of time before they will have no flawed cards like that… mabey im not entirely sure though… oppinions?

i agree with bob, i don’t think the game is going to change much, iv only been playing since Lorwyn and i think they are trying to bring more people into magic, yes i agree that the no mana burn is bs, that’s what stopped my elf deck from trampling face all the time and that not being able to manipulate the stack so hard is going to suck, transmuters and moggs will have to refrain from blocking now. :’( but the new rules make it easier to understand for new players and people like me who are only relatively new and for people whining about money, a nub is a nub no matter how much money they have, strategy will beat brawn 90% of the time.

the new rules are more confusing than the couple rules i never got before, i heard lifelink doesnt stack anymore, (makes rhox war monk/battlegrace angel combo worthless)? dont know if thts true or not, but still, i believe the changes from rfg to exile are good, but i disagree with the damage on the stack change, i used it so many times with dauntless escort/mogg fanatic/burrenton forge tender to either win or help win the game. sure mogg fanatic will be gone soon, as will burrenton forge tender(unless reprinted, cross ur fingers) but still dauntless escort will have to be used before your creatures die instead of when damage is on. im interested to see what the new damage rule will do to my gameplay, but either way, good or bad, i believe magic 2010 will go alright for most people, i dont like all the new changes, but ill get over it, its just a game.

why do people say “u” when they saying blue, i get tht blue and black both start with b, i did pass the 1st grade, but why not say blu/blk/red/grn/wht like i always do? as for the new gameplay, idc so much about most of the rule changes, just stack.

what you guys dont understand is that the new rules are actually gunna benefit better players… now you have to make a decision, do i get lands with my tribe elder or kill his 1/1 there used to be only one choice, to do both… the more choices the game throws at the player the more mistakes he can make… so you guys are dumb pretty much :)

how about trick for Ninjutsu?

firstriker damage on stack, then return for ninjutsu.. then another damage.. :(

Ninjutsu would have to be used as soon as blockers have been declared so that if you have an attacker who hasn’t been blocked then you ninjitsu, in if you want, or you let the damage go through. From my understanding you can’t do tricks after first strike damage either because first strike happens then normal damage happens with no time in between.

My main question about the rules changes/m10 is this: now that they have “beginning of the end step” does that mean that they have braught back in the end of turn loop? Can I now use my Jund Battlemage to create a 1/1 Saproling token after the beginning of the end of turn step but before the end of it? Because I had a great combo unspokeable one deck where I could get him out on turn four ready to swing having kept their lands down to one or two and creatures out of play thanks to the pirate ‘hoodwink’ ‘iscon septer’ deck. But when they changed the rules about end of turn loop whole that deck became useless!

For the ninjutsu rule, I believe that you can’t deal the first strike damage then switch a creature in for regular strike damage. This is because the time to use this ability is when he is attacking and not blocked. This triggers during the declare blockers phase.

So when he deals his damage, the creature is no longer “attacking and not blocked” he is now just dealing damage. You had to use his ability before the combat damage phase.

As for the first strike, You could never enchant a creature to give it first strike, have it deal its first strike damage, naturalise the enchantment and have it deal its
regular damage (in essence double-strike). It always only had 1 source of damage, if he gave it in first strike or normal damage it, it doesn’t matter. It only deals it once.

Some of these new cards, such as the 4 mana 3/3 vampire looks insane. In a monoblack vampire deck that is so broken… I’m not saying theres that many vampires already in existance but theres at least two here listed. I remember sanguir vampires is an ok one too. I wonder if they will bring in the creature type “warewolf” to counter the type!

what do you want me to say? should i be one of those idiots who thinks that red is going to be viable in the next set? as long as there are red cards and mountains then RDW will always be viable, and they spoiled mountains months ago.

One mana for 3 damage at instant speed is amazing. Flame javalin is 4 damage for RRR or up to 6 colorless. And this was still considered an amazing uncommon.

With lightning bolt, ball lightning, chandra and now seige gang commander so far in 1 set, this is easily a base for a good red deck.

i agree i allready picked up my sets of lightning bolt and ball lightning. red will be great but they willl probably bring SOMETHING in for the other colors.

The strongest addition to RDW was volcanic fallout. In this environment it’s more important than bolts or gang bang commanders – not to suggest that those are un-important.

And I think that Chandra, for a 5 mana card, doesn’t have enough of a game ending quality about her to be considered for a RDW build (emphasis being on the ‘W’). Amazingly, not all planeswalkers are good.

chandras good if you dont fun a playset. you see theyre realy good againgst fae and againgst tokens and btw go to standard in the forum and make a rdw thread adam or bob

I have to say that there are some really powerful cards out there as of now. Even the commons are bombs. Hopefully they don’t make too many broken cards.

Yeah, I’m betting said angel shows up as 3WWW, a la Twilight Shephard. Otherwise we’re seeing Yu-Gi-Oh levels of power creep that I simply wouldn’t expect from Wizards R&D. Also, 9/9 shroud guy seems cartoonish, especially in comparison to the 7/7-for-7 in the same set. I can’t think of a player I know that attached to that one green mana in place of colorless, nor convinced that Giant Growth > +2/+2 and can’t be targeted.

This Kalonian Behemoth is not as good in my opinion in comparison, it’s a 9/9 which is huge but I can’t add any targeted pump to it.

Those green fatties are generally only strong in draft, although now that there’s no board wipe I’m not so sure about that statement.

I’m also surprised they reprinted a noob raper like pithing needle.

I’m dubious of the Baneslayer Angel for a few reasons. The biggest being there is already a card in the set with that exact casting cost, that fills the sames role: Serra Angel. WotC usually changes the casting cost for stuff like that.

Hey, i was wondering if anyone could help me out with the rules and enlighten me on what should have happened in this situation, which happened in a game.

Player A was on 3 life, Player B was on 4 life.
Player A’s turn.
Player A had ‘Kaervek the Merciless’ in play already.
Player B plays ‘Bogardan Hellkite’ as an instant, in player A’s turn.

My question is what happens in this situation, whos damage gets resolved first? do they resolve the same time resulting in a draw?

doesn’t kaervek deal damage when they PLAY stuff? (ie hasn’t resolved yet) so kaervek would deal damage first.

He cannot direct damage because of the way the spell stack works:

Player B declares the cost of the spell thus triggering the ability of the Kaervek. Before the Hellkite is in play the damage must be resolved. If the player dies before hellkite resolves then hellkite never resolves.

I can see a big BW combo deck based around lifegain in this set. That enchantment sanguine blood seems incredibly powerful. Couppled with a card I remember which says “Gain life equal to the number of cards in your library” becomes game winning!

I believe that the card is “Invincible Hymn” and it is not “Gain life equal to the number of cards in your library” but it is “youre life total becomes the number cards in your library”.

GOLDEN LOTUS!!!! is best card in this set!!

I like the set and many of the cards in it, Master of the Wild Hunt is the perfect weapon against those blue control decks that rely on little creatures who make it impossible for you to do anything. My one complaint is that they’ll be cuttting Lorwyn from standard over 10th Ed. This is completely illogical as it upsets the two blocks/one core set standard format and many of the cards from one core set are usually in the next one as well, meaning many more repeats.

The ones that everyone uses in world championsip tournaments that rely on stuff like sower of temptation and meddling mage. MotWH is perfect against those, and we needed a way around them.
