We don’t know if CA is going to be shitty yet, we just know that it’s overpriced. Unless I’m missing some spoiler somewhere?

From the original set? Yes. From Commander’s Arsenal? No. Not to mention I posted the comment before I even knew the Retainers were going to be in the set. :P

Hopefully this set will include Modern staples and not a bunch of bulk rares that just happen to be Modern-legal.

Wizards is going to out price themselves with these new sets. Like the housing market where everything skyrocketed and then dropped, this will eventually happen with Magic. People spending 100′s of dollars on single cards that are key for quality play isn’t sustainable, eventually something will break. I am a casual player and I feel mythics are a punishment. I bought a case of Ravnica Returns and opened zero Jaces. How is that fair to the casual player. I didn’t even end up with a partial set of shock lands. Wizards makes no money on the secondary market so why not make good competitive cards easier to obtain. Anybody agree?

It’s like you’re expecting to get what you want, there is a bit of randomness involved. That’s why there is a new thing out there called trading.

you know most of the time the money cards aren’t the mythics though it ends up being a rare. Not neccisarily in this pack, because of the way its being made, but Jace is what like 16… deathright shaman is about the same, and there are plenty of other examples, like Boros Reckoner is now at 25 which makes it the most expensive card of the set, and its a rare for gatecrash. Magic with the way Legacy and Moder and EDH is set up is actually the most secure card investment game there is. You lose a lot less money than for example Yugioh where a banlist comes out and you lose a few hundred bucks immediately and then you have a hundred dollar card you need a playset of coming out in the next set. Magic is very unlikely to go through a crash, though the market will fluctuate greatly because all values are based on playability and not rarity in magic. Meaning as a new combo is discovered those card prices shoot up and others drop… doesn’t sound that bad to me

You’re 100% wrong. There have always been ludicrously expensive cards. This game is coming up on 20 years old and only getting more popular. There may be a wane in total player base at some point, but the game is never going to collapse in on itself. Your position is that if you buy a box, you should be guaranteed to get the card you want out of the set? Then you’re playing the wrong game, just as most casual players are.

One booster box is not enough to get every single card you want; it never has been and it never will be. If you want four of every card in the set, you’re looking at about a 2000 dollar investment. And that’s using the secondary market where you’re guaranteed to complete it.

You cannot both be a “casual player” and expect to get every single rare and build a constructed deck that is worth over 400 dollars on the secondary market. I don’t know what you mean by a set of shocklands, I’m guessing you mean one of each, putting the value of those cards at about 50 dollars resale; boxes are worth 90 dollars. If it was guaranteed that you would get a 15 dollar mythic and that playset out of a box, then people would be buying boxes and selling the cards within to make their money back. This ACTUALLY HAPPENED with Zendikar when the new fetch lands were made. When you look up the older set prices on websites to see how much a box is worth, the ones that go for 140+ are the sets in which the secondary market has driven up the cost because of how many good cards there are in the set.

Your argument that people spending 100′s of dollars isn’t sustainable is absolutely incorrect. This is not the housing market where people have to buy houses, this is a luxury market. Any magic cards you buy are not a necessity, you’re buying them because you want them. If you want to be a casual player, stop using expensive cards. There are thousands of older cards that are good cards that have too many loopholes to jump through to make them competitive. They cost pennies. You can’t make crappy financial decisions and then be mad that you spent a lot of money. You can’t spend 90 dollars and expect to get 150 dollars worth of cards. There are going to be terrible cards. My suggestion? Stop buying boxes, go to your local store, play tournaments. If you can consistently place at drafts, your packs will cost around 2 dollars apiece instead. This is a skill based game, and it rewards you not only on the table but in your wallet.

This is a masters set. it’s in the summer gap where they normally release an alternative play method (Un-set, Plainschase, Archenemy and so on) the price is high to reflect that. It’s not a typical set, not been advertised or sold as one.

also, stop whining that you didn’t get what you want just because you spent a load on it, those boosters gave you trading power and other cards for deck building.

if you need something specific, buy or trade for it.

I’m pretty sure you’ve never even thought about economics until this question was asked, Kevin. While the game isn’t going to pop and crash and die, there is a bubble, specifically in legacy, and that bubble is going to pop and legacy value will deflate hard. The card supply in legacy is way too small and the cards are way too expensive for it to be maintained indefinitely. People know that the format will die, which is why it’s going to pop, as opposed to wither. When people see prices start to drop at all, because people playing the scg open will realize that they can straight sell their deck to the vendor for more than they would get for winning the open (obv a bit of an exaggeration, but you have to get at least t4 to make your deck worth it). On a related note to that though, the idea that you have that a luxury market can’t pop because it’s a luxury is actually the most hilariously stupid thing i’ve ever read in one of these posts. Check out the tulip crisis. At some point everyone will realize that these cards are wroth more than their weight in gold and will sell their stuff for real financial investments. The fact that it’s a luxury product makes it substantially more likely that everyone will evacuate at once. As for 20 years of no popping, you’re just hilariously wrong. There were 2 major crashes that almost killed the game, then you had the vintage crash that completely devalued eternal cards for YEARS (do you remember the 2 years that you could get underground seas for $25? because I sure do, and i guarantee everyone who had seas got rid of them while they still could.)
The point i’m kind of meandering to in that you really don’t understand what you’re talking about and aren’t qualified to completely and angrily bash a random on the internet, who, while is still wrong for some reasons, is substantially less wrong than you are, and probably has a better understanding of basic economic forces that you do (although that doesn’t seem challenging since you apparently think the housing bubble was caused because houses were a necessity, when in fact, the bubble was created, in part, by an advertising push by banks to make large houses seem like a luxury that anyone could afford, if people had treated them like necessities, then a lot of the financial collapse could have been prevented.)

This is only half right. Rare drafting is actually the process of selecting a rare from a pack and passing it even if the rare does you no good.

As for shops doing that, its scummy. If you want to draft, you need to accept that you may not get the cards you want from said draft. I have been to drafts where people got multiple cards they wanted and threw a bitchfit over having to pass the pack, thats what drafting is about.

Also, you are an idiot. Nothing after alara (inquisition/lingering souls/fetches) will be printed in MM. Please research before you say anything. I will wait on some witty retort that I will make look terrible again. Thanks for your time.

Agreed, this isn’t so much of a skill based game anymore like Kevin claims, it’s a “skill of the person playing at the pro tour and then ability to just ape his or her deck later” game now

Well as far as uncommons go look up the card inquisitor of kozileck, quite possibly misspelled the last bit, but if you start typing it into Starcity you will see what I mean, its an uncommon and is at $8 a piece right now. While it will not be in this set as its not in the range they are reprinting, I hope it does get the point across sometimes, uncommons are harder to get than the rares/mythics. Magic is kind of wierd about that, but it is what it is. Also just another point to be made is that Force of Will, for legacy is at $100 a piece right now and is an uncommon.

legacy staples NEVER drop in price. ever. unless they get banned, or something comes out that totally trumps them (but to do that it would have to be an earth-shattering multi format all star). honestly I can never see FoW declining price ever. nor wastelands, nor fetches, nor karakas, or anything on that level. unless wizards does a legacy masters (yeah right).
