Worldwake Spoilers (145/145)

This is the second expansion from Zendikar. It was announced on the Wizards website today.
There will be 145 cards and it is being desinged by Ken Nagle.

Well, I wish they would hurry up on Zendikar. Can’t wait for some new, spicy cards. I know M10 just came out, but most of those cards are reprints. I want some new action.

the zendikar symbol is clearly these diamond shaped stones that have been seen in the lands released so far. Worldwakes symbol looks a lot like stones opening up, as if they are ancient artifacts being activated, perhaps bringing about some sort of plane-wide change or cataclysm.

well for one we don’t even know what Zendikar is about so I wouldnt be making assumptions about the next set besides the fact that Zendikar is a very powerful plane so the is gonna be a powerhouse set

What set is between Zen and Worldwake?

Worldwake is after zendikar. The last set has a name but isn’t released due to storyline issues from what I understand.

Not storyline issues, I am pretty sure I remember reading that they are leaving it at “prosper” for now which is its code name like how Zen’s is “Live” and worldwakes “Long” cause they said if they let “prosper”s name go now that it would some how be obvious of what the set would have to do with or something.

I’m really liking Zendikar, especially the ally mechanic and Nissa(since I have an all-elf deck), so I can’t wait for some info on Worldwake. This is shaping up to be my favorite block since Onslaught.

They should have returned the hideaway lands instead of making the new mono colored lands.

The only good mono land they made was the green one. Some of the common ones can be ok.

elf combo just keeps getting better

I don’t know, I think Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle is pretty sweet. It gives burn decks a reason to be happy they drew another land, and since they’re not legendary, I could see them replace Barbarian Rings.

The blue common land that gives a creature flying for a turn is great, because it can win games. Play that land with the Baloth Woodcrasher in play? Swing with an 8/8 with flying AND trample… I have a green Akroma this turn. “gg” guys.

Valakut sucks. It comes into play tapped and will only give you a turn seven lightning bolt if your playing mono red.

I like the mono white land that gains you 2 life and the mono black one that makes a player lose a life. Those are the only good common lands because the others affect creatures and you want to play these lands on your first turn when you don’t have a spell to play.

I’ve seen the red common used to great effect in conjunction with Bushwackers, or any goblin for that matter.

Does anyone think they’ll come out with some more trap cards? I’ve been wanting to make a Blue Trap card deck for shenanigans, but I was just wondering if anyone thinks they’ll expand the trap card library?

I agree. I think the rare black land is severely underappreciated, if I spelled that right. I just cant help but think of having it in a black blue deck. “archive trap” yourself, and boom, the land is a powerhouse.

Yeah, but instead you could just play a mountain and play a goblin chieftin that turn. I guess that the lands could be used for late game but it dosn’t help when you need one more mana to play something and you draw one of those lands. They only help the first or second turn, or in late game when you don’t need the land.

I think they will just have traps in the zendikar block. It will probably be like the abilities in alara. they will just use them for one block.

I think Chandra Ablaze is underrated. I have found great combos with her. You could traumatize yourself and use her last ability.

Chandra isn’t the best idea of mono-red decks in my humble opinion, because they want to win as fast as they can.

I don’t “see” a good UR deck with Chandra nowadays in T2.

When you use Ablazes first ability you can discard a lightning bolt and play it as an instant. That’s seven damage! You could use her second ability and discard your hand and play all your burn spells as an instant too while your opponent looses there whole hand without anything happening. And then finally with her last ability you can play all those burn spells you discarded earlier.

If you respond to Chandra’s first ability by playing the spell Chandra’s ability fizzles, you never discarded a red spell.

Emeria (the white rare land) is pretty sweet. I’ve been getting my butt kicked by it for a few weeks now. It’s a great combo card.

I have seen some insane RG decks that use it. I watched a few that won some standard matches online and have had the pleasure of being beat by them more than once.

How was it used?

i have seen some pretty good decks,
mainly i think the W/R landfall deck works a treat,
or a U/R with mainly red, x1 Ablaze and x4 time warps,
and all that, the U/R seems to win more but is also more on the expensive side,
i personally run a pure black aggro vampire deck,
gets the job done,
from what i know vampires will get boosted in Worldwake anyway
so i might aswell have it now.

the blue one is great once youve set up an army and gotten living tsunami in play, youi can make one of your guys a flier every turn, works great in limited

Emeria was used with Iona, shield of emeria, which named black when it came into play. My current type 2 deck being a not very good black/red deck, not being able to play black spells is an annoyance to say the least.

Plus his deck was very control based with day of judgement, journey to nowhere, celestial purge etc.

Valakut, is a cool land Bob, what more can you ask of a land that gives a sweet bonus when you start playing your 5th land?! Hmm

I like that crypt of agadeem too! Seriously think the blue rare land, is utter drool tho, unless you use that ability early game if you opponent is mana screwed then activate it later the second time… But thats far tooo restricted

Me too. Just because they overdid it a bit in Shadowmoor and Alara it doesn’t mean they have to exclude it completely from the next couple of sets.

Agreed. I could see people trying it out in Extended, maybe even Legacy. If it works well in things like Dredge, then the Crypt will get the love it deserves.

It’s not so much for Goblins as it is RDW, Bob. If you don’t have a 2-drop, your Guide attacks for 4 on turn 2. It’s like a sorcery-speed shock that you can have 4 of.

Merfolk, baby.. Merfolk are gonna stomp Vamps in Worldwake. Just you wait…

You can’t even respond to Chandra’s ability that way. Since discarding the card is part of the ability’s cost, the card has to go from your hand to your graveyard in order for the ability to go on the stack. Casting the Bolt in response to the ability would mean that you would be trying to cast it from the graveyard. Casting the Bolt first and then discarding wouldn’t work either, because when you cast a spell, it’s on the stack, and therefore no longer in your hand to discard (assuming Chandra’s ability could be played at instant speed, which it cannot.)

Always been a fan of hybrid. What I’d also like to see in the future are cards that do very different things based on qualities of cards. As an example, I’ll use a simple (but interesting) common from the second fan set:

For sure man. They can’t bring out an ability like that an leave it out of the next two sets in this block. Vampires, allies, landfall and those type cards are bound to get even worse, so ready yourself with prot black :-)

Had my fill of those multi-colour cards, think wizards needs to retire them for awhile and get back to the core colours and reinvent or expand them, instead of hybrid humping enemy colours and ally colours for like the fifth block in a row!

I’ve seen that land in action with unearth. the guy milled most of his deck away then used the crypt to unearth everything and swing for lethal. it was pretty unnerving…

I’m not gonna lie that multi colored was very over used but I still like it. And I want more dragons. But I understand they can’t be a main species in every set which blows.

No slivers. They are powerful enough already thanks to legions. Gemhide sliver from a few sets back pushed them over the top.

I’d've made it like this: Curious/chaotic tutor: w/u/b/g/r
(one of any colour), Instant: Target opponent searches your library for 5 cards with different names. You choose one of these cards at random and put it into your hand. Shuffle the remianing cards into your library.

Discarding a card is NOT a part of the cost of Chandra’s ability. The only cost is putting a counter on Chandra. If this were the case, you couldn’t legally use her +1 effect with no cards in hand (which is not the case. You simply “discard a card” that doesn’t exist, and then deal no damage to anything).

You can play Chandra’s ability and then cast a lightning bolt in response, but you’ll have to discard a DIFFERENT card (and unfortunately, that is not optional, for those just looking to build up to her big ability.) The card is not discarded until the ability resolves, at which point, if–and only if–a red card was discarded this way, you deal 4 damage to whatever.

‘cept Enlightened Tutor was a cheaper instant that puts that card on the top of your library.

These are ‘code names’ for the sets. Wizards has been doing it for a long time. They want the set-names to be a surprise.

I know all about the whole code name thing, Leaf…I guess I let wikipedia mislead me…

I think he’ll be UW seeing as Zen had R, G and B planeswalkers…

Man D&D ain’t nerdy. Great game with great friends and you don’t play D&D during the day. Every time I played was when my friends got done with work and other stuff late at night and we stayed up until 5am playing D&D and eating some great food mind you.

Can you link to some sources on this stuff please? I have seen Smother and Leatherback Baloth on other sites with sources, however, there seems to be a lot of doubt on the Abyssal Scornlight, which I’ve seen on about 50% of the sites that I look at for spoilers. Also, is the Jace planeswalker from the rumors or actually spoiled? I know people were guessing that but I don’t understand why everyone thinks there will be just one planeswalker. I could see Garruk and Jace and maybe even Ob Nixilous being printed…but that’s more rumors/guessing over spoilers.

What card are you looking at for helping Jund? Is it the Smother or the Leatherback? I doubt the Leatherback would be run. It’s 3 Green in a deck that already has a janky mana base, and the Leatherback isn’t even that great. There’s already a 5/4 for 3 so why would a 4/5 for 3 be that much better? If anything, I could see the Leatherback being run Monogreen Eldrazi.

Jace has been spoiled in the sense that wizards has officially said that jace will be back with his new name. They are having a promotional event to gather different pieces of the card around the world. I believe there will be 2 planeswalkers in this set if I remember what Rosewater said in an interview a ways back.

A possible 5 manlands? This might actually make control decks a possibility in standard again.

I think Zendikar, and probably Worldwake too, is not very vell done. It sure has some spicy Bombs, but i dont really see exceptional mixings between the colors except for the Allies, but they’re too expencive for my taste. Things like Alara and Lorwyn/Shadowmoor etc. rocked!

Even though it is a manland it’s still pretty high in a blue/white deck to pull off so as to actually being able be part of a control deck it’s gonna have to have some sort of acceleration or a whole lot more control than what I’ve seen in standard so far.

I’d be kind of disappointed to pull the Colannade (although I love the word Colannade). It’s a two color Serra Angel that I have to pay the casting cost every time to use it. I’d rather just draw an angel.

abyssal scornlight sucks if you use it on most creaters it would kill them (its self)never using the +3 power. A lighting bolt only cost one mana. I have been getting verv dissapointed with magic as of late. Maby it is time for a different game.

@sweetestsadist: But you can cast Day of Judgement and have a 4/4 flyer waiting that you can still tap for mana after you’ve attacked with it. It can also be difficult to get rid of for someone relying on traditional removal, since they have to “catch” it while it’s still a creature. I’m not terribly excited about it, but it seems destined to be a staple of U/W control.

Manlands, please don’t suck. I started playing magic at the beginning of the Shards Block, so I never got to experience Manlands at full force. Please don’t let me down.

um…i think the point IS to kill creatures, play it, target an opponent’s creature. Not enough? play more allies.

a 4/5 for 3, mono colored, with no drawback? i like it. @ everyone who doesn’t like manlands: theyre great, i actually use a deck of ALL manlands (and other miscellaneous fun lands) and it’s a fun build.

Actually, that is what makes it awesome in my mind. You can target ANY creature. Think of it as “you may deal 3 damage to target creature”

…but with the added option of making your Nimana Sell-Sword (which would be at least 4/4 by then) more aggressive, or turning, say, your Kraken Hatching into 3/1.

The UW manland is pretty awesome. Its a dual that comes into play tapped (like many other duals in standard), becomes a sizeable beater late game and it has Vigilance! A manland with vigilance offers a lot of really interesting options in combat. I swing, you block, tap for mana to remove from combat. I swing with manland and some other idiot, you block both, tap and path, etc. May not be great, but it certainly is cool.

Colonnade is costed like a finisher, and is a powerful control oriented manland. That is also, at worst, manafixing. It can attack then tap to path a blocker.

Scornlight is removal attached to a creature. Specifically it and a lot of the other creatures you can play. Its not going to be a constructed chase rare with the speed of the format, but its going to be a fucking limited bomb. On a stick.

I thought of that too. But your mana is tied up for that consideration. It could win the game in some conditions, yes, but if I’m playing U/W and all creatures are dead, I want to play a creature and leave my mana free to prevent my opponent from being able to come back.

If this card is in play, an Oran-Rief Survivalist is a 2/2 creature for 2 mana that kills creatures with power three or less. How can you be disappointed of a game “as of late”, if you haven’t been playing it long enough to realize how ignorant your comment is.

It isn’t that they are poorly designed, it is just that they don’t mesh well with the alara block. At all. Wizards is trying to reestablish the old ways of magic. Where the color wheel was important and cards were strictly defined by the color they were. (see the GGG 4/5 above for example)

this transition will obviously be awkward when paired with alara. I think that some sort of transition could have been nice, instead of going from completely gold to completely mono. But zendikar is still a well designed set, you can really see this by drafting the set on its own.

I want to see a UUU spell.

Hopefully of the counterspell variety. I think that if it was UUU then wizards wouldn’t have to worry about warping the game by making a good counterspell.

I doubt you’ll see anything close to what your describing Quazi. Wizards are making counters and bounce either more mana intensive or situational specific. I kind of like the direction they’re going with that. I never agreed with Counter everything being a strategy in magic. Blue’s supposed to be the thinker, the manipulator. I can see a blue player bringing a complex but extremely effective strategy to the table. Counter everything just seems too easy for a colour that supposed to represent the “intelligent” colour.

not to mention that there are a few allies that get +1/+1 counters, so you can potentially have your oran-rief (or better, kazandu blademaster) dude go 7/1 or better ueot when you’ve cleared their battlefield

WRONG tapping is in affect before it is a creature and theirfore cannot block, BUT if you attack and have the mana you can return him to being a creature of course not tapping him fore mana

Or say your oponent plays something that makes you sack a creature you could tap himself and other lands to turn him into a creature and sacrifice it.

The manlands have a huge potential to be quite good, I think. Although smother is going to make pulling them off a bit difficult, especially if you just dumped 5 mana into the thing. Although the vigilance would make things hilarious, swing, they try to get rid of it, tap for a blue and spell pierce. I have a feeling the R/G and B/R ones are gonna be broken just because wizards seems to love Jund.

but leatherback baloth for GGG i can play it no problem in my naya (it also features the 5 color from conflux) bit kore hard than toctar but it does what toctar could`t do! provide a strong green defense and be a staple for green. what rarity is it? uncomon?

since the man land becomes a creature w vigilance, it doesnt tapp from attacking so then after he attacks or during the attack he can tap the man land to power a spell, namely path to exile, to get rid of potential blockers.
the man land is still a land while becoming a creature so it can still tap for mana
and yes the man land can still block, jus make it a creature on ur opponents turn

yeah one should read between the lines if someone is to appreciate magic the gathering cards. what he mentioned was a nooby comment who MAY have not seen a lot of creative plays.

why in gods name would i want to use a 5 cost that’s only a 3/2 flier? And why would i possibly want to further probably kill my damn creature by giving it 3 power at the expense of 3 toughness? isn’t it easier and cheaper to pump with low cost enchantments.

Oh and great a land that becomes an angel for a turn… for 4 mana… why? now four of your mana is tapped and you have a land that can be burned… gay.

Why? Simple… card advantage.

In the first example, Abyssal Scornlight, you get to kill creatures simply by playing creatures. That’s a twofer every time you play a creature… it’s a bit overcosted for 1 vs 1, but makes a fine multiplayer deck card (in an ally tribal deck, naturally).

Celestial Colonnade – you get a creature in construction without having to replace a valuable blue or white control spell. It’s a 2-for-1 in the sense that you can draw it in your starting hand and say “I have at least one land and a creature”, making your hand that much more keepable. While it is a land that can be burned (and what land can’t? Hello Goblin Ruinblaster), it’s also a creature that can’t be countered.

How do people not understand that Abyssal Scornlight can be used to kill creatures as well?

Dudes, you guys should read cards more carefully and not make stupid-ass assumptions so quickly.

Abyssal Scornlight is essentially a toned-down Nameless Inversion that triggers every time it or another ally hits the battlefield under your control. Sure, you can make your guys wreck more at the expense of toughness…but its ability can target ANY creature. So a more devious option would be to drain and kill an opponent’s weaker creatures, and for the bigger ones, just get them down low enough so that a Lightning Bolt or Burst Lightning can kill them easily.

The manland I’m not so sure about only because I haven’t played manlands that much.

The Leatherback Baloth is a true beast in every sense of the word. It’s much easier to play than Woolly Thotcar (at GGG, compared to Thotcar’s RGW) and it’s a 4/5 to boot, so it’s not as easy to drain it and kill it.

Celestial Colonnade? Are you guys crazy? This card rocks! God, I hope Worldwake makes blue/white playable again.
I play a UW control deck with 3 Meddling Mage and 4 Silence, and almost all of the tools seem to be there to make a good UW deck in standard. You’ve got Wall of Denial. You’ve got Martial Coup. You’ve got low cost Spell Pierce (for the early game) or Flashfreeze (against Jund and Naya). You’ve got Martial Coup, and all of the soldier cards that could make UW acceptable. It’s a possibility. We just need a few more cards. A 4/4 flyer WITH vigilance that can tap for mana? That’s crazy talk. The only thing that can stop him is the manlands the other colors will probably get… :(

I agree, I think Abyssal Scornlight could come in very useful (if it’s real). Definite upgrade from Murasa pyromancer.

I love the idea of multicolor manlands, they fit in with the set perfectly. The only downside is that they will all sell for $10 if they’re rare.

dual manlands possibly better than most dual lands. How can you say they are bad when they have so much potential?

Of COURSE you would want to kill an opponent’s creature, that’s part of the game! Also, they’ve been making creatures out of lands for a long time, look at Treetop Village or Faerie Conclave.

You just like multi-colored which means your horrible at magic and that you can’t find ways to put the colors together unless wizards tells you too.. All the sets are decent because if they weren’t, why would we all be playing? Some sets are suppose to be mono-color themed and people should understand that and not whine about silly things they dislike..

I disagree that all sets are decent. Case in point. Kamigawa. Block based around, The Legendary Rule, Spirits and Arcane, and. A mechanic that ends spell casting. Yes, this has some nuggets of goodness, but as a set overall. It sucks.

Of course smother will smash Alara, it’s supposed to… They want to return to each color doing what it does best, thus they have an answer for manlands and Alara. But it will be fine once Worldwake is released because then there will be a strong enough cards base (M10, Zendikar, Worldwake) to build with. Some cards will still be broken from Alara like Maelstrom Pulse. Also, it is possible that the three of a single color concept will be theme therefore smother is needed to keep things balanced.

Because there are a lot of newer players. That is what wizards has been trying to accomplish. The veteran players will understand the mechanics and potential better because we have seen more. Type 2 is divided into the novice and the veteran. So that is why these problems occur.

This is my hope for Worldwake:
1. Return of UW control
2. The playablity of RB ally
3. Maybe return of Green Stompy (Old School Beatdown Deck)
4. The death of Jund and other 3 or more colored decks.

As awesome as manlands are, they might cause decks to become rediculous again, lol.

I just hope they don’t make enough, to make a manland deck, that uses manlands and polymorph into Iona or something like that, because that in standard is going to be a little annoying.

WWe don’t really play because all sets are decent its just that sometimes there’s nothing better around and we don’t want to quit the game altogether. I agree with QuaziPrince, this set and Alara were both pretty good, it’s just that they don’t fit well together.

It is unlikely that we’ll get a counter lke that. All the same, I always did like cards that were entirely colored mana symbols.

I understand that there are new players, but being able to target other creatures just seems like… a given, you know? I mean, in my opinion, you’d HAVE to lack simple logic to be able to think “Whoa! +3/-3! I can turn their 2/2′s into dead things!”

This would be an insane counter. Look at Cryptic Command, which could do either of your options, but for 1 mana more. Maybe your spell is at the same lvl, but hey, CC was insane as well ;-)

Yeah, its pretty much a Nameless Inversion from Lorwyn that you can use whenever you summon an ally. You’re opponent summoned their big 10/10? play out three allies and maybe a burst lightning, thats three more creatures you have and one less they have

Only the first set in each block features new lands. Later sets in the same block use the same lands as the first one.

As to the Ally (and this goes for everybody who’s complaining, not just you, oww): it works on your opponent’s creatures, not just yours.

As to enchantments, they are just begging to be two-for-one’d.

Next on the list, the manland. First off, it costs five mana, not four. Secondly, it’s an elemental, not an angel. (You did read the card, right?) Thirdly, you can use it for mana before you have enough to turn it into an Elemental. Then, when you do make it an elemental, it can attack, then Path away any flying blockers. (It has flying and vigilance, in case you didn’t notice.) Fourthly, of course it can be burned. Any creature can be burned. (Yes, even the ones with shroud. Lavalanche.) However, they would probably have to use two burn spells (unless they have a burst lightning, in which case one.) Even in that scenario, however, you had the use of your land and they wasted four direct damage on it. You are the winner there.

As to the gay bit, I have no idea. It’s possible. HOWEVER! WE ON GATHERING MAGIC DO NOT DISCRIMINATE MANLANDS BY SEXUAL PREFERENCE! (Particularly since “manland” implies that they’re all men.)

I wonder if all of them will be multicolor manlands. If so, by the looks of it, the R/G will probably have trample and first strike. Also, you don’t have to use Abyssal Scornlight’s ability. It says ‘may.’

That manland is awsome…for one, it taps for two colors,and to poeple who say that five mana is too much to activate it are very wrong. Since the late game you probably have a bunch of mana that you do not even need, getting a 4/4 noble heiarch with vigilance and flying is an awsome deal ( I know that the land can not tap for green)So an early game mana fixer and late game beater is very helpful.

Just because people like multi-colored cards doesn’t make them a horrible player. There are alot of multi-colored cards that great to play.Just think about cards like Meddling Mage,Kitchen Finks,Loxodon Hierarch,Lightning Helix.They are all multi-colored and I wouldn’t call a person playing these as being a “horrible” player.Maybe you should read a multi-colored card once and see how good they can be.

i’m not so sure about the speculation on jace having 4 abilities. i know that zendikar block one that’s broken a few traditions already, but i think the 3 ability planeswalker stays for now. i shrunk the picture of that jace and compared it to my own jace, the ability box looks to be the same size, if they adjusted the other ones it’s probably because all of his abilities contain a lot of text.

Goblins usually “trade” in lives of their own. Usually a lowly goblin for directable damage. Look at his hand forming a 3. He might enable to sack a goblin for 3 dmg, or something along that line.

It is possible that Jace has 4 abilities . . . before Elspeth the rule was that PWs had two plus abilities and one minus ability, Elspeth changed that. This is evidence that wizards is willing to change the rules on PWs. Also if any of the PWs have 4 abilities, it is probably going to be the blue one. Of course, this is just hopeful speculation. I wouldn’t be surprised if it had 4 abilities, although I doubt that it will.

It is highly improbably that the Bazaar will not have that ability. That would be WAY overpowered. And I doubt it will have a Goblin Grenade ability as that has been done before and isn’t really what comes to mind when I think of a Goblin Bazaar.

I hope it’s something quirky like: tap, look at target player’s hand: exchange a card in his hand with a card in yours.

Lol I don’t actually think it will be that, but it would really cool.

As for the rest, the Celestial Cannonade strikes me as being incredibly awesome: flavorful, powerful, over all just an awesome card. I was somewhat disappointed that the only ‘duals’ we got with Zendikar were the enemy fetch lands, which are much worse than the Ravnica shock lands. Zendikar is supposed to be the land set, so give me some awesome lands!! Then this came out, a dual land that is also a powerful man-land, very strong. I thought the vigilance was unnecessary but then I realized that the creature having vigilance means you could attack with it then use it for mana the same turn. I would like to see the ones for the other colors, if there are any, and this one is very strong.

Abyssal Scornlight, if real, is probably the most powerful ally to date. Personally, I think allies are incredibly weak, and I don’t think this card will change that. But unlike the other allies, this one is strong on its own. Probably on par with Shriekmaw.

Finally, Leatherback Baloth is fairly bland and unimpressive. With the last few sets Wizards keeps pushing highly efficient creatures at 3 mana, with very restrictive mana costs: Doran, Thoctar, this. It’s not a bad card, it’s just meh in terms of flavor. Might see play in Mono-green Eldrazi, where it becomes a 5/6 flying with Eldrazi out . . . also might see play in Casual. But other than that, just a bland, meh rare.

Of those cards that are spoiled, I am really only excited about the dual man-lands. And they look to be awesome!

I think the trader will be like: R:BB R:UU R:GG R:WW or something like that.

or possibly just: R:2 of any color.

That seems like a really cool ability, like a Warren Instigator, but maybe better. Put an uncounterable Seige-Gang Commander into play on 3rd turn for free, okay?! Might lend some credibility to Goblins.

Ah . . . yeah, it will be probably be an uncommon then. Its P/T is the polar opposite of Wooly Thoctar’s, so it will likely be the same rarity. 4/5 for GGG isn’t really rare quality.

Chandra was a let down and Jace Beleren was too, IMO. I always thought mill was a lame way to win, so his ultimate was lame. Outside of that, he was basically a weak card draw engine. He was only played extensively because card drawing is so weak right now and he was the one-eyed man in the world of the blind. Hopefully this Jace will do something proactive at least, if not aggressive.

My guess is that the Bazaar trader will do some kind of saving mana for later like Mercadian Bazaar, or it will be some kind of magus of the bazaar, but more usable in red decks. Ex, discard your hand, draw two cards.

4 abilities on Jace seems like a step in the right direction for blue to regain the strength they’ve lost since lorwyn block rotated out. But four, din’t break traditions.

I think Bazaar Trader will be something along the lines of “gain control of target creature until the end of turn.” The artwork looks like he’s got some beast on a leash and is asking for something in exchange. Maybe “3, T: gain control of target creature until the end of turn. It gains haste:? He’s holding up 3 fingers for three mana? That may be reading too much into it though.

Damn. I wasn’t hoping for Jace having four loyalty abilities. I was hoping there would be three loyalty abilities and one static ability.

Yeah, that’s no surprise. That’s what the old Jace did, that’s how blue functions as a mechanic, and that’s how many Planeswalkers have worked.

That first ability is decent, not great . . . but it is a plus 2 ability. With the old Jace, a lot of the time you would activate the plus ability just to get loyalty, even though it hurt you. So this ability is refreshing, even though of marginal benefit, it’s a benefit with a plus 2 ability. That other ability, basically a Brainstorm, is really solid. A repeatable Brainstorm is good, particularly with some sort of shuffling.

So far, it looks good, but not overpowered.

I think that jace’s second ability will be more like “brainstorm” :)

Wouldn’t it make more sense that the brainstorm is a +1 cost rather than a minus cost?

+2 for minor ability that does not affect much
+1 for a decent draw ability
- whatever for an ability that actually affects the board
- lots for the ultimate ability

In terms of flavor probably-if there are 4 abilities, it makes sense for 2 to be plus abilties and 2 to be minus abilities. In terms of power and balance, maybe not. The first Jace was played when (-1: draw a card) was an ability. (+1: Brainstorm) is a bit too powerful even at 4 CMC.

Are you sure? Ugh. That third ability seems redundant and weak, given the first ability. And it had better be a plus ability, there’s no way that could ever be a minus ability. The fourth, the ultimate I presume, is basically more mill. LAME.

I think the third ability is something like ‘Return target ____ to owner’s hand.’

I don’t think it is ‘look at target player’s hand’ because look at the first ability: Look At takes up too little space. They would need to add in some words to make ‘Look at target player’s hand’ longer so it will coincide with the revealed text.

The firts ability does affect if you have sphinx of jwar isle on play… you can watch you first card and then use jace ability to send it to the bottom of your library if you dont want it or leave there.. IMO is a fine ability that lets you tell what the other player could play the other turn..

look at the top three cards of your library and put two of them back in any order.

well for one guys if the new jace was that broken it would sure the heck be more then 8 counters for the last ability and trust me the first jace will never loose his popularity i mean with doubling season being in extended u can make any planeswalker more broke then (insert _ _ _ _ <—kcuf). And yes i agree that the Celestial Colonnade is a great card i mean its a land that can become a flying vig creature th at still taps for mana.

O btw for the land, I don’t think that it’s so great. tapping 5 mana to attack with it means that u have to have at least 7 mana open. I’d prefer to cast a sphinx of any kind than to attack for 4. (except if it’s not lethal, duh..) This land may only see play in some heavy control decks, that sit around doing nothing with 13 lands in play :D

The thing that this elemental-land has vigilance has it’s own point + you may have an unexpected blocker. Manlands are always forgotten by the players especially when you help them to forget about them.

ok Fezzless, you only have to play the 5 mana for the land once.
you pay the cost and if you look there’s not at the end of turn so it will not end, just like a stalking stones 2.0.
so once its paid you have a flying 4/4 that taps for mana and with harms way can block and kill a baneslayer :)

mmm I’m not completely sure of this new manland anyway… there are too many creatures breaker around, people would destroy a creature and a land with a single terminate (and smother too since the mana cost of lands is 0)

So, assuming that a person has the necessary green mana, you could effectively give the manland shroud with trace of abundance… by the time you have the mana to make it a creature you would have a 4/4 flying vigilance that can’t be removed… could be very useful.

Well they really wouldn’t be destroying a creature, they would be destroying a land that can become a creature. Of course, you did dump mana into its ability, which is a tempo loss. At the same time, your opponent wasted a removal spell on a land, when at that late stage of the game, you may not have needed a land to begin with.

if it’s true what you say then the card we see on this page is a fake: the text I can see so far (guessing the words we can’t see) says “…cards from target player’s library, then that player shuffles his or her hand into his or her library”. I don’t know about you guys, but I don’t think this Jace is for milling. From what I can see, the original Jace is much better at it; and I know how good he is since my friend’s main deck is a U/B dedicated mill deck with Jace as his only PW. He can usually deck a person within 6 turns. That aside, this new Jace’s abilities seem more like a “Stack my deck, look at yours” kind of thing. Definitely a control type planeswalker instead.

i agree with blackworm, it would just be dumb of wizards to have 2 mill jaces, especially if one was more powerful than the other. blue needs better control also.

I don’t think that you will reach his ultimate very often given that his plus ability isn’t something you would want to pay 4 mana to be able to do each turn, the other three abilities are so strong, and the ultimate cost is so high. So I think you are really using it for the other three abilities and we can dismiss the ultimate fairly quickly.

Yet that’s a cool plus 2 ability. Very blue, very controlling. If he is already in top-deck mode then it completely shuts down your opponent. But most importantly, I like it because it’s a plus ability that is also helpful.

0: Brainstorm. Holy shit. That’s very powerful. Repeatable brainstorm without a loss in loyalty is very, very strong. Especially with a shuffling ability. Fortunately, we have a cost-free shuffling ability in the way of fetch lands. Draw 3 for free, put 2 cards that you don’t need from your hand to your library, shuffle them away.

-1: Sorcery speed unsummon. Meh. It is worth mentioning that a repeatable unsummon each turn is basically a removal spell. Unfortunately, it comes with a loss in loyalty. It could potentially be used with some lame combo, like Ranger of Eos or Sphinx of Lost Truths. But then you may as well be using the Brainstorm side with no loss of loyalty. Might be cool with one your creatures that can destroy an opposing creature when it comes into play. These are all secondary applications. The obvious application is forcing an opponent to return a creature to his hand for an powerful swing in tempo or to repeatedly return an opposing blocker. I wouldn’t be surprised if I was underrating this ability, but I don’t see it being as powerful as the others.

At any rate, it comes with a good plus two ability and a sick 0 ability, meaning you have access to two good abilities that don’t reduce his loyalty. He should stick around for a while. It is undoubtedly more powerful than the other Jace. My initial thought is that it is the most powerful PW released so far.

At first you may want to bounce opponents creatures and check your own top deck. But I think is cool the other way, return your comes into play effect cards for reuse and deny their draw!

Everybody seemed to forget about Bazaar trader. Go on and reveal him! I really want to see what that goblin does. Also, by the looks of it, they are remaking all the original PW’s. I’d much rather see a revamped Garruk, being the best original PW, than Jace. The original Jace is still going to be used more because Turbo is still highly used in standard.

Yeah lands that attack suck like stalking stones, treetop village, mishra’s factory, mutavault… Especially in control.

The Timmy in me really likes the idea of Lilliana Vess’s reusable discard with Jace’s reusable bounce.
Obviously, that may not be the very best way to go with a 5CC Planeswalker deck… but Jace and Lilliana are the off-colors for Cruel Ultimatum and Ajani Vengeant still would fit in fine… lilliana is a little underrated and would allow for a more “silver bullet” approach with onesies on cards like maybe the ultimatum or Chandra Nalaar or Sorin Markhov or whatever… and I’ve always loved sideboards for silver bullet decks (like being able to reliably play a Telemin Performance with just one on the board. Would the deck be the bomb diggity? Probably not. But sounds like fun and I’ll be working on such a deck, methinks.

I know “fateseal” is supposed to be a future ability (via Future Sight) but I kinda wish they’d just start using the word rather than spelling it out every time it appears on a card (such as Jace – 1st ability). Does it really matter that much? It feels like just modernizing, like replacing text with “vigilance” was.

I don’t think this ability would be the same if they put fateseal 1. If I remember correctly, fateseal only let you choose an opponent’s library. This lets you choose yours as well.

I agree. Why waste a removal spell on a land in late game when they have the mana to play a baneslayer.

It’s not mirror of fate. The biggest difference is that if your opponent doesn’t have anything in their hand, they no longer have a library. But at -12, it’s not going to go off very often.

Sorry, no new spoilers until after the holidays. The masterminds behind MTG and the Worldwake set are all on vacation.

Okay…has anyone realized that as the sets go on further and further the cards start becoming more and more overpowered? For example, back in the day when a one white for a 2/1 was good? Well, that was Savannah Lions, a relatively expensive, rare, and amazing card! Now look at what MTG is doing…they are making three mana 4/5′s, 3/2 elves with haste that let you play another spell from your library for free (Bloodbraid Elf), Celestial Colonnade, Planeswalkers, Jund (pretty much). I mean, I understand how this makes the game a lot more intriguing, but when a simple card deck infects 37% of the competitive players who all play with the same deck (Jund), then something must be going wrong. Jund has Mealstrom Pulse, Bituminous Blast, Sprouting Thrinax (practically a three-for-one, except when your opponent is playing Blue, and counters it (which barely even happens anymore anyway) or white, which will Path to Exile it, or Celestial Purge),and Garruk Wildspeaker (which is absolutely insane, but maybe not too overpowered anyway). In Zendikar they printed Goblin Guide, whose drawback isn’t at all a bad thing, since the opponent can only play one land a turn anyway, and you get to see the top card of their library on the first turn of the game, just so you know how to play during the first game, or at least when side-boarding. In any case, he isn’t at all like Spark Elemental, who just does three damage, then goes away. Goblin Guide sticks around for at least four damage before your opponent even is able to do anything…unless they want to Path to Exile your Goblin Guide, netting you three lands in a quick red deck, on turn two…you just win….

Landfall is one good thing MTG did do, because what isn’t fun about hoping to draw a land when if you didn’t have the triggered ability on the field, you really wouldn’t want the and at all? It adds to the fun, rather than to the cheapness of building a deck that garuantees that you get Bloodbraid Elf, and a removal spell, or Wolly Thoctor out for only 4 mana. Bloodbraid Elf was a mistake…even though not a lot of cards have cascade, and the rest that do aren’t at all overpowered…like Bituminous Blast, and Enlisted Worm, those are good, because it is harder to make a deck completely built around getting a certain card with your cascade, so instead, you just play them and see what happens, it adds to the LOL moments while playing the game.

One other thing…do you really think MTG intended to print Devoted Druid, and Quillspike in the same set…because that combo was just retarded….

Kycap, I disagree. Certainly, with every set overpowered cards are released. However you suggest that the game has become unbalanced, which I’m not so sure about. Jund is outrageous right now, but isn’t unbeatable. Hell, I run awkward renegade budget decks and I can manage to beat Jund decks. That’s the thing about Magic – there’s always an answer, and always an option. Nothing pisses people off more than Bloodbraid into a Woolly Thoctar, then I throw down a Double Negative and get rid of them both.

I’ve seen some older cards that are more overpowered anyway. Seriously, Myr? There’s not many standard decks that can even touch an affinity for artifacts deck. Your best hope is to have a Baneslayer and some intimidation bolts handy. But what solid deck runs both of those?

My point is there are “overpowered” cards in every set, but Wizards has done an amazing job of balancing MTG for almost all play formats for 16 years, and I don’t see that ending.

I noticed that too. Wizards are pulling, what my social circle calls an MK3 (as in Mortal Kombat). That’s where balance becomes too much of an issue for weakness that they just say screw it and produce a bunch of cheese. They still balance it out, but power levels are higher than, say Mercadian Masques through Time Spiral (with the exception of Mirrodin). The balance however comes from every color being powerful with little weakness instead of the other way around. If more cards are powerful, less cards will be considered cheap.

Draw a card and discard at random on a 1/1 body for 1R? At rare no less? That card would be at least ten types of unplayable, and I would be nothing short of pissed if I opened a pack to find that in the back of it.

I noticed the same thing, but I have different feelings about it. With variety comes imbalance. Let’s take StarCraft, well-known for its balance. Believe it or not, there were times when the game was not so balanced, where certain races used the same exact tactic which resulted in an a lightning-quick victory. They fixed that. They fixed a lot of things by dumbing them down, so that it is what it is today.

Now, with Magic, how would they fix imbalances? Print newer, weaker cards? Who the hell goes “Oh sweet! New set! Time to spend money to make my decks weaker!” It didn’t matter for StarCraft, because you didn’t have to pay any more than you did when you purchased the game. The cards, as time goes on, basically HAVE to be better than previous ones. And another thing that adds to “wow, cards are SO overpowered now” is that a lot of the old, broken cards, are also not seen often. Yawgmoth’s Will? 2B sorcery which gave all cards in your graveyard flashback until end of turn. Whee! Stifle! U instant, counter target activated / triggered ability! Hello, Phyrexian Dreadnought! And there’s the Power 9. Let’s not forget about those.

Anyway, with that 4/5, I feel like they should have done that a while ago. Perhaps not a 4/5 (maybe a 4/4), but whatever, there’s no room for GGG in sets centered around color-mixing. Mono-Green was known for its creatures back then. Green had Thorn Elemental, when Blue had, like, the Vizzerdrix and Red had the Trained Orgg. But Mono-Green was left behind as time went on. Historically, all the other colors had ways to stop green’s giant creatures, since their own creatures just weren’t up to scratch. Now, however, the other colors have removal AND good creatures. This is actually one of their only big mistakes I think they made.

And about that Quillspike / Devoted Druid I have absolutely no effing idea what they were thinking.

I agree in part and disagree in part. Most people would agree that overall cards have gotten more powerful since MaRo has taken over. They would call this ‘Power-Creep’. I agree with you that I don’t think Power-Creep is intrinsically bad for the game. Since MaRo has taken over, the overall power of cards has increased, but there is a smaller disparity between the cards. Before him, some cards were over the top broken, and others were clearly overpowered. Now, the average power of cards has risen, but there are fewer unbalanced cards. Recently though, since Morningtide, this has changed.
The most important thing for competitive standard is a balanced metagame. If one strategy is clearly dominant, then it will be overplayed, and the meta will turn into a whole slew of Jund v. Jund matchups-not very fun. Remaining true to the color wheel is also important, mostly because it contributes to a balanced metagame.
MaRo did very well in Ravnica and Time Spiral, but in Lorwyn/Morningtide he started to make mistakes. Bitterblossom, although probably not overpowered in its own right, was too powerful for the metagame. It was too powerful for a tribe that already had the overpowered Cryptic Command, counters, removal, and card draw. UB isn’t supposed to have the most powerful two drop, in addition to whatever else it has. Shadowmoor did little to alleviate this power imbalance. Rather than fixing this problem by making a balanced set in Shards of Alara block, MaRo answered the overpowered fae by making its enemy colors (Jund) overpowered. Maelstrom Pulse, Volcanic Fallout, and Great Sable Stag (M10) were all strong answers to fae. Now the problem is that Jund took these answers and became dominant itself. These kind of knee-jerk reactions to the metagame will simply continue to create imbalance if this is how he goes about things.
The key to Worldwake will be to create a balanced set rather than finding a foil to Jund. MaRo’s success as a designer/developer will probably come down to this set. If he can create a balanced set then he will go down as a good designer/developer, if he can’t then he will simply go down.

Why is it okay for them to break the format of planeswalkers and make planeswalkers with two +1 abilities but it not be okay to make a planeswalker with 4 abilities? If you think about it, Jace actually has no more playable abilities than Elspeth. I don’t think this Jace is broken by any stretch of the imagination so I have no problem with it. The format of planeswalkers seems to be a guide rather than a rule so what’s the problem with 4 abilities?

I want to see the rise of Blue once more. Possibly U/b or counter-burn. Mono-Blue would be nice. Maybe Upheaval??? I miss the days of counter everything lol

The problem with creating a “Balanced” metagame is that the Future-Future league cannot test every possible deck ideas, that’s for the actual players of the game to do. Every deck has a foil that simply has not been discovered yet, and when new sets come out, foils are found in the cards that already exist, with a very small smattering of cards from a newer set. Noone can hope for Worldwake to have the exact foils we need for Jund, because Worldwake was done being developed ELEVEN MONTHS AGO. If you want to balance the metagame, it’s something you have to do yourself. Take a look through gatherer, find cards that hurt Jund’s gameplan. It’s possible, but it’s probably not something anyone will really TRY to do seriously until Worldwake comes out.

I like Jace with for abilities. blue has always been about the control, and the previous blue planeswalkers didnt control very well. Tezzeret was artifact centred (which is also blue and fine by me) and old jace was just a bad drawing machine unless you got his final mill off. New jace is all about the control, and in a very blue way (draw, bounce etc). He’s exactly the kind of card blue needs to be formidable again

I think you may have not understood what I said. I am not advocating that Wizards try to counteract the metagame by making an anti-Jund set, that’s what created the problem to begin with. They made cards to counteract fae and consequently made Jund too powerful. What I am advocating is that Wizards strive to make each new set released BALANCED WITHIN ITSELF rather than as a counter-measure to previously released sets (which just creates a cycle of imbalance).

You’re right, to a certain extent, about the Future-Future League being fallible. They cannot make every strategy precisely equal, that’s impossible. What they can do, what they must do to succeed at their job, is to make numerous viable strategies, which are roughly equal. But I feel strongly that with Shards they didn’t do a very good job of this. They made Jund obviously, unambigiously, stronger than say Grixis. They made some strong Naya cards, but that didn’t really translate into a strong strategy. Esper artifact makes for a reasonable Tier-Two deck, but the problem is that many of its good cards are really only good within the Esper shard. Bant also got some good cards, but is clearly weaker as a whole than Jund. Alara block wasn’t balanced enough. Was this intentional or unintentional? I don’t know. But it is their job to make the game fun and balanced, they didn’t do a great job of that with Shards of Alara Block. I am just hoping they do better at it with this block.

Being that he is a goblin, and since he costs 2 and is a rare, I was thinking he might be something that red could use as a card-drawer. Perhaps a reusable ability similar to Goblin Lore, Burning Inquiry, or Gamble?

Yes, I know its a difference of 1U v. UU, but considering how often Mana Leak was effectively a Counterspell, it may as well cost the same as the original interrupt. That and making it double blue makes it slightly more difficult to cast, which would make people run heavier blue to ensure it can be cast on turn 2 if needed.

Obviously a flat-out counter would be too good for UU, and so you’d have to give the opponent something in return. I think just giving them a card would be weak, but if you get to see the card they get, then I’d say it’s more balanced. You trade a card and a sliver of info, and they get to go through their deck for more ammo. It could be potentially better in a mill strategy, since they lose the spell and, in a sense, a card from their library.

The trader they explain is from the Grotag Tribe. The Grotag Tribe tries to domesticate animals and some times that back fires. This could be the Goblin hoser card, but my latest guess is the Bazaar Trader does this:

When Bazzar trader enters play put a 2/2 insect token into play that has: Sacrifice a Goblin: It gets +2/+2 until of turn.

Going more off of your idea Occult, I could see something like sacrifice X (where X could be any amount…maybe 1?) Goblins to put a creature from your graveyard into play. The 3 fingers could be referring to an ability that costs 3 mana instead of sacrificing 3 creatures.

Elspeth is in MOST white decks. A lot of decks are running Garruk. Tezzeret is in a huge amount of decks in extended and legacy, and even the old jace makes an appearance in almost any blue deck, although there aren’t many of those running around. Eldrazi decks are fairly viable and many people are running them, ALWAYS with Nissa. Even Ajani Vengeant is in most Naya variants, including as a four-of in the deck that WON WORLDS. I mean, for goodness sake, “Planeswalker Control” is a major archetype.

I’ve been running U/W control at FNM the past two weeks! I’m still tuning it, but it does fairly well against Boros, and the matchup with Jund is only SLIGHTLY bad, if at all. RDW I have not had much experience with, But I’ve won the one match I’ve played (though my draws were fantastic XD).

That land is fcking stupid, dual lands hsa been pushed too much, there is way too much mana fixing, if there is a whole cycle of those creature lands then how is that going to help players to play something that isnt damn jund?

We have triple coloured lands, dual lands that doesnt come into play tapped, terramorphic expanses, enemy fetchlands, duals that come into play tapped and adds life, panoramas, rampant growth, harrow, khalni heart expedition, etc, etc, this is just too much, why would you add more? there is almost no reward on playing mono or dual colored decks as its easy as fck to splash a third colour

Although I really, really like multicolored cards, I was hoping they’d at least be able to keep their hands clean for AT LEAST one set. Oh well. I still think the land’s cool, though, but I see where you’re coming from.

All the fixing is in flavor of Zendikar. This card holds true value to the block. The land is attacking. Jund is being beat by everything now since people know how to beat it. Quit complaining! Besides, manlands always have been great. If you can’t draw a creature, you have the possibility of one already on the battlefield.

It’s not necessarily a cycle, W/U land that comes to life as an elemental? Looks like the roil to me, which only to this point really fits that flavor of the color wheel.

blue has had its chance in the past with all that pointless counter everything and mill you to death mentality. lets see red, who has been gimped for too long, rise to its rightful place. jund aside.

are you kidding?? Jace is amazing, and even if blue doesn’t make a comeback it’s still not accurate to say that Jace won’t help blue. Mindsculptor has been even said to be just as powerful as nicol bolas and costs half as much mana! It may not be the best card by all means, but it’s certainly up in the top ranks, if not the best walker, and overall a great card. Blue really needs love from wizards for it to make a comeback, but with a walker like this i expect to see the blue mages come out of their basement and into top 8′s.

i disagree. Red, while not necessarily mono-red, is great, and in pretty much every deck that’s successful (see Jund, Boros Bushwhacker, Naya Lightsaber). I think red along with Green andn Black are the most powerful colors during this phase in magic and i’d like to see Jund get knocked down a peg or two by some blue action. Yes, blue indeed has been the powerhouse of many phases that MTG has had, but can you honestly say that you wouldn’t like to see the deck that 30-40% of players (that happen to be competitive) play, get knocked down by an almost forgotten color. For a while now, White has been the all around best color in terms of great cards by themselves (baneslayer, silence [for real, why is no-one playing this], Elspeth), and Jund (the other three colors) have been dominating almost all the top 8′s and certainly winning every FNM i’v been participating in. Don’t get me wrong, Jund is great and one who would deny that is a fool, and white is also good, but blue really needs this and maybe the next few sets to give them some tools to win. Mindsculptor is one such tool and i’m looking forward (fingers crossed) to see if wizards does indeed hand the bombs to blue needed to throw jund out of the throne and back to at least even levels with other decks.

Well, i don’t have much time to read everything, but i’ll join the question about the Jace with 4 abilites.
Think a bit. Blue has always been the color of manupulation, mind, control – wisdom… As all planeswalkers, with their own colours have big creatures, abilites that make them bigger and such, why can’t Jace be a master mage instead and have 4 of those abilities,
Like, read the comics – the history of Magic… he’s searching for more and more knowledge – he could have reached a level of power, granting him something different that the other planeswalkers … an extra ability.
I hope that the other planeswalkers, if there will be new ones in other sets, won’t have 4 abilities.

it’s ability is probably tap rrr: bazaar trade deals 3 damage to you and each creature you control. Then discard 3 cards from your hand and all opponents draw 3 cards. then sacrifice 3 permanents and remove your grave yard from the game.

while that maybe true, note that i am not necessarily defending jund. i would love to see a mono red deck that does something more than just burn shit. if anyone understands this.

It would be a strictly weaker looter card. I don’t think that WotC would make a card with that ability a rare. I would assume that it’s ability will have an exchange of some sort, whether it’s permanents or card draw.

Or heck, bring back Memory Lapse. That would be very synergistic with the new Jace. Or maybe Memory Lapse with a kicker?

*WHY ICE CAGE IS AMAZING*
If you Ice Cage most creatures from Jund, their toast. Think about the spot removal that Jund has: Bolt, Terminate… all spells that would kill the creature anyway, and with very few exceptions, they won’t be Pulsing an Ice Cage.
For Bushwacker it’s the same issue. They’ll have Path, Bolt, maybe Burst, which would kill most of their dudes.
That’s why I am a big fan of Ice Cage… it’s a blue and cheap Arrest with virtually no drawback.

As far as what Blue needs, I think instant speed card draw, or even decent sorcery speed card draw, would help more than counters, IMO.

Blue hasn’t had any decent card draw 4cc or under for a long, long time. Not since Time Spiral cycled out, with Ancestral Visions going away. Note: Divination and Jace Beleren are not decent card draw mechanisms.

the shards block is still in standard and for shards and zendikar to be compatable together, zendikar needs to have some quality dual lands. you cant just have one set in which all the cards are at least 2 colours, and then striaght to mono cards again in the next set. Besides every block has its share of multicolour lands. And jund is easy to beat, its just nobody tries. I have a wur deck that kicks junds ass and does well vs boros and Naya as well

you guys are looking at this the wrong way, bazzar trader it a R1 1/1, so it will be a less powerful version of warren instigator perhaps because it is a rare or because it will be less awsome.

i’m not exacly sure what it will do, but not fitting the criteria of red goblins ( 1 mana crazy cards such a goblin guide) it should be a very good effect as it is 2 mana for a 1/1.

Is it possible that Bazzar Trader has a trade effect? think about it. As it would come into play Exchange Control of this creature or target creature you control with any target creature an opponent would control. A creature swap. Or maybe exchange land. its got to be an exchange effect.

Actually unitedreaper was using Phage the Untouchable as an example to prove that the names of cards don’t have to have anything to do with their abilities. If that was the case, Phage would have had Shroud.

You’re only half right hotteeth. You play Jace, RETAIN PRIORITY, then pump (HIS) loyalty. Your opponent can only bolt in response to your spells or abilities so Jace goes out of bolt range as the cost goes into effect before the ability resolves and before bolt damage can be dealt to him. There is no point where he can be profitably bolted if you pump him after he is played.

What I really want to see reprinted is Urborg Tomb of Yawgmoth. Then vampires can splash blue!

Jace is a HE.

No. You can’t play Lightning Bolt until you have priority. During your opponent’s main phase, that means you can’t do anything until your opponent passes. So, your opponent announces Jace, then pays 2UU, and you get a chance to respond. Jace isn’t in play yet, so you won’t cast Bolt in response. Now Jace resolves, and Jace’s controller still has priority, and activates Jace’s first ability. Since the +2 Loyalty is part of the activation cost, the counters go on Jace. Once the activation is announced and the cost is paid and the active player declines to put further spells or abilities on the stack, you can finally announce Lightning Bolt. By the time Bolt is announced, Jace is at 5 Loyalty.

Bro, I’ve yet to see a deck where a planeswalker is NECESSARY except for Jacerator. And let’s face it, if we’re going to talk about overpowered Planeswalkers, Elspeth takes the cake. Really all Planeswalkers do is draw out your burn and force you to redirect your attacks to keep them under control. I haven’t been playing long, but I play at hobby shops once or twice a week and have yet to think, “Man, that Planeswalker just breaks this game.”

I personally don’t play them. I don’t really like the idea of having a card whose abilities are entirely conditional in that if I can’t protect it, it’s useless to me. And that’s a choice that every player who uses a planeswalker has to make. Can they feasibly keep it alive in order to use it for what they need?

I’ve seen three Baneslayers hit the field, one after the other, and suddenly I’m out of Terminates and Doom Blades and have nothing to put up against her. I’ve seen Progenitus hit the field and, not running white, once he’s out I’ve got nothing to stop him except a lucky ass pull of a Cruel Ultimatum, IF Progenitus is the only creature they’ve got out. But chances are the decks that get him out also throw down a fucking Iona and suddenly I can’t play anything black. Trust me, Planeswalkers are far from the most threatening thing to hit the battlefield in Magic.

Rytiko, if you play any legit tournament, Progenitus will never come out. Games are won or lost way before turn 10. Planeswalkers are nice because most are fast. And what is worse, wasting two lightning bolts on turn 3 or 4 to take out a planeswalker or using a doomsblade on a baneslayer by turn 6 or 7? Planeswalkers can come out early and NEED to be dealt with quickly. No other creature or card has both of those qualities.

Deek, he is not talking about a 10th turn Progenitus, it can be tricked into play by turn 3. Planeswalkers are not “fast”, and they are easy to deal with.

The only planeswalkers who technically “protect” themselves via their abilities are Elspeth, Garruk, Nissa, and Ajani Vengeant. The rest just die if you have a creature on the field, burn, or PW removal (ie Pulse, Hexmage, O-Ring).

And, for the record, no one plays Doomblade.

Smother is good for mono black (vampires). Vamps can’t run doomblade maindeck because there are too many black creatures running around, especially in Jund. With Smother, Tendrils and Gatekeeper, Vamps have removal for nearly every situation. Excluding Sprouting Thrinax of course.

Planeswalker abilities all rersolve at sorcery speed so therefore you can respond to Jace’s +2 ability with Lightning Bolt. his ability would go on the stack, then lightning bolt goes on the stack and it resolves in the reverse order. meaning Jace dies before HE gets to 5 loyalty.

Mackie, You are 100% correct. I am a level one judge. And as for the post on Planeswalkers cant be targeted by spells that say “target player” that is incorrect. Blighting deals 3 damage to target player and they discard 2 cards. Any damage from a source a player controls, dealt to their opponent can be redirected to the planeswalker. For instance Manabarbs…. every time a player taps a land for mana, it will do one damage to that player. If it is my Manabarbs in play, and you tap one land for mana, I have the choice to redirect to Jace the damage.

As for priority, you guys should look up the rule for a moment. Many people think you can play or do anything you want when ever you want, and that is not the case.
Its your turn;
Untap…opponent cant do anything in this step.

Upkeep… upkeep abilities activate or need to be paid. After the active player does something(or nothing) they have to pass priority to the other player. If they dont want to do anything, you go to the next step.

First main phase… Active player has PRIORITY!! Opponent cant do SH!T. Active player can cast or activate as many things as they want before passing priority. i.e.
Bolt, Burst, Bolt… then I sat I want to pass priority… the first bolt, which hasnt resolved, and is on the stack can be responded to at this time because prority has been passed. If my opponent casts Cancel, I cant do anything unless that is all they want to do, in which case they pass priority back to me… Then the bolt is Canceled and we go to the other two spells..Burst and Bolt…and so on an so forth. Stacks build up and can go up and down without completely resolving. Once both players have passed priority in any phase, that phase is over and the next phase begins.

What you’re missing here is that adding Loyalty Counters is a cost, not part of an ability’s resolution (see Comprehensive Rules 107.7) and that cost needs to be paid before the announced ability goes on the stack (116.1).

Of course, if the Jace player says “Done” or “Enter combat” before activating the first ability, or activates a different ability, then you’ve got the green light to Bolt away.

Dude, here’s the thing with planeswalkers. They can be devastating, useless, or directly in the middle. They all come with that nasty last ability that costs too much but pays off nicely. Realistically, most experienced players won’t allow one to gain enough counters. We know this. It’s the +1 and -1 abilities we care about. most of those aren’t unreasonably helpful or harmful. (with the exception of chandra ablaze and garruk wildspeaker, as well as a few others) They’re meant to attract newcomers to Magic, as well as provide nifty little boosts to any veteran players. Try one or two out. Jace’s extra draw or maybe Liliana’s discarding may prove to pull you out of a hole, or at least help.

Don’t knock it until you try it. That’s all I ask.

Bolt cant kill him right away. If Jace enters the battlefield, it means that the spell resolved, and the stack is empty. Since, under almost any circumstance, the active player is the one that cast Jace, the player with him on the battlefield gains priority, which means he can add the 2 counters for the first ability.

Adding the counters is a cost, which means that adding the 2 doesn’t even go on the stack. It isn’t until his first ability goes on the stack that an opponent could bolt him. After the bolt resolves, Jace would be down to 2 loyalty, and then Jace’s ability resolves.

In other words, he can’t die to Bolt.

I think Blue/Black mill strategy would be best. Sure, with blue/green you get things like Khalni Heart Expidition, Harrow, and Misty Rainforest, all of which are very synergistic with Hedron Crab.
But if you don’t see a Crab early on, you’re either blowing landfall ammo to thin your deck in search of a Crab, or you’re holding onto your Harrows and treating them like blanks until you find a Crab off the top.
With black, you get a lot more cards that help the general mill strategy as well as offering more removal in case creatures or other or other things become a problem.
Some black cards you could add either as maindeck or sideboard options:

Mind Funeral – realistically, mill 7 to 11 for 1UB.
Vampire Hexmage – Kill walkers for BB.
Ravenous Trap – Exile a graveyard off a Crab trigger, Funeral, or Trap… for Free.
Soul Stair Expedition – Kill they’re creaures, block with your Crabs, sac the Hexmages, and bring em back. If you’re in a pinch, you could even mill yourself to find the Crabs by putting them in your graveyard, and bringing them back with Expeditions.
Bloodghast – to both play as early recurring threats and as things that can die early on to put counters on the Soul Stairs.

I have to say, I like Blue/Black for mill much better.

Actually, I think Smother will, if anything, help Jund.
Most of the Jund builds I’ve played against had stuff that Smother really wouldn’t do much against.
Most Jund players aren’t going to care if their Gatekeeper dies, because it’s already done it’s job by killing one of your creatures.
Hexmages they can just sac in response to at least slow down an expidition or something else with counters (or if youre not careful, kill a planeswalker of yours).
Nighthawks can die to it no problem, but since most people are either playing Jund or Boros, they’re going to have Terminates, Bolts, or Paths anyway.
Most Importantly, Smother can’t touch Malakir Bloodwitch, which, with the Jund builds I’ve seen, tends to be the favored beatstick of choice.
Smother can’t kill creatures that the major decks can’t kill already, and the creatures that desperately need to have more cheap removal options for them aren’t getting it out of Smother (Baneslayer, anyone?)
If anything, it may help Jund in the mirror-match, and with Jund vs. Jund happening everywhere, a decent card as added insurance against the other Jund player’s Nighthawk could swing the match in your favor.

My guess is that it will be at least a sideboard option in Vampires, but I could easily see it main-decked. Doom Blades aren’t helping them much, and with the cheap Vampires and Boros dudes, it could actually help them in the match against Jund, but not by much.

At best, I could see Jund in the sideboard, but only for the Mirror and against W/U (Another spell to kill Meddling Mages). If there is more decent mirror-match tech available, more people will be apt to play their “mirrror-ready” Jund builds, which will lead to more people playing Jund. I don’t think I need to mention that mirror-readying an already dominant deck is something we definitely do not need right now. With more stuff like this, I could see the percentage of people playing Jund climb to format-destroying numbers that would make Dreadstill, Raffinity and Flash-Hulk shiver.

For standard’s current metagame, the few spoilers we’ve ssen so far do not in any way convince me that Jund is going to be stopped.

because the loyalty change is a cost(and not a part of the ability itself) it will get +2 immediately.

But i am not sure if i would use the +2 ability vs jund,
you risk that BB+ LB or BB + blightning or BB into maelstrom pulse still kill it at once,
in wich case they will get even more card advantage.
using the +0 ability to find a card, and then have it lighting bolted while afcourse not optimal isnt that bad,
you removed their lightning bolt while searching for answers you might need.
And if he doesnt have a answer you get in a really good position(though that would be rare against jund). afcourse bb-> blightning will still cause -1 card advantage, but thats true for pretty much every plainswalker

Yes. Jace will go to 0 if he lands and is immediately bolted. HOWEVER, if you (in response to the bolt being cast) declare that you will use his first ability, the cost of that ability (+2) will change his loyalty BEFORE the bolt hits. After the bolt resolves, Jace is at 2 and his first ability resolves.

i’d just like to point out that PW abilities ARE NOT INSTANT SPEED. The rules specifically state that “You can activate one ability from each of your planeswalkers during your turn, AND ONLY WHEN YOU COULD CAST A SORCERY. Sorcery speed is not Instant speed. Learn the difference. It’s there for you to read, as you say.

Magic doesn’t have a concept of “speed.” Instant and Sorcery only tell you when something can be done, not how “fast” it happens. The active player can play a Sorcery any time he or she has priority, during a main phase, when the stack is empty. Once Jace a Planeswalker resolves, all these conditions are true.

Here’s a good thing to know: a non-active player can never, ever cast a spell or activate an ability until the active player passes. There’s no point during which a non-active player can just cast a Bolt until the active player decides (1) to do something or (2) end the phase.

No if you do not pass priority you can add the counters. It is not done as an instant but as the other guy said it is a “cost” for the ability like tapping mana or sacking a creature.

And secondly, Judge at states gave a quick Q&A with everyone. and one that came up was garruk(Loyalty = 3) and bolt.

if you play garruk(or any plwker) the controlling player maintains priority until he passes it. which means, if you play jace and do not activate any abilities you have passed priority to the next player. so bolt is still effective, just depends on the controlling players situation.
(you can activate it right after playing it but it might not be what you wanted or needed to do. Example: +1 on garruk, untap two already untapped lands?? that’s why bolt is still effective against the plwker.)

About bolting Jace, it doesn’t happen. A card is either in play or not. How are you gonna bolt Jace before he hits the table? The damage won’t touch him. After he’s in play, opponent can +2 him. He’s already at 5 before you respond with bolt, because +2 is the payment, not the result of the ability. Everything before the colon is an activation cost.

Any ideas as to what Bazaar Trader will be? Going with his trader theme, I’d guess he’s either drawing cards or messing with artifacts. Maybe something like Goblin Lore on a stick… draw some cards, then discard at random. Maybe discard less cards if you drew a Goblin?

Here are the ones that pertain the stupid and continuing argument:

115.3b The active player receives priority after a spell or ability (other than a mana ability) resolves.

-This means that the player who casts Jace gains priority once the spell resolves.

115.7. If a player with priority casts a spell or activates an activated ability while another spell or ability is already on the stack, the new spell or ability has been cast or activated “in response to” the earlier spell or ability. The new spell or ability will resolve first.

-To simplify again, Go ahead and fuckin bolt in response to my Jace. These rules together means your bolt would go off first and my Jace would still be at three, congrats your a dumbass for trying, or B: Jace would resolve giving me priority, I give it +2 because I can since I have PRIORITY, and your bolt just puts it at 3, and congrats again you’re still a dumbass for trying.

306.5d Each planeswalker has a number of loyalty abilities, which are activated abilities with loyalty symbols in their costs. -Hey look at that rule, straight from the rule book! If you don’t get it the rule say “A player may activate a loyalty ability of a permanent he or she controls any time he or she has priority and the stack is empty.” Seeing as the above rule says the player who controls the spell that resolves has priority then that means Jace can get a +2 BEFORE you bolt. Now let me look up the rule on costs since I can already hear that argument coming. So this with the others I think is enough to prove that you CANT bolt Jace. Well you can you would just be a dumbass for trying and thinking you could kill it.

For the cost rules just read section 600 of the rules, the two I am posting are most pertinent but it might be good for some of you to read thsi whole section.

601.2e The player determines the total cost of the spell. Usually this is just the mana cost. Some spells have additional or alternative costs. -in easier words just figure out the cost after declaring the spell you will cast or ability you will activate. In our case the cost would be the addition of loyalty counters.

601.2g The player pays the total cost in any order. Partial payments are not allowed. Unpayable costs can’t be paid.

Now the cost is paid so for example: I announce Jace, I play Jace and Jace resolves as per the rules above I have. priority. I announce that I am giving Jace +2 counters to activate his first ability. The cost is +2 so before anything even resolves or goes to the stack I give Jace +2 counters and now the cost is paid so we move on…

601.2h Once the steps described in 601.2a-g are completed, the spell(ability) becomes cast. Any abilities that trigger on a spell being cast or put onto the stack trigger at this time. If the spell’s controller had priority before casting it, he or she gets priority.

I’d rather use the Brainstorm-ability, but because adding or removing loyalty counters are costs you may save him from Lightning Bolt if you want to.

I just want to see this guy working together with Lorescale Coatl. With acceleration Coatl on turn 2 and Jace and his Brainstorm-ability on turn 3 means nothing else than a 6/6-Coatl hitting the red zone on turn 3.

If your opponent has a Lightning Bolt, maybe he would consider that bolting the Coatl as Jace’ ability is on the stack makes more sense. So you don’t have to use the +2 ability to save Jace from being bolted.

This is where magic is difficult for starting and noncompetive players.
you can only play planeswalker abilities whenever you could play a sorcery. This normaly means it can only be used in one of the mainfases.
The +2 is a cost to put everthing behind is what is put on the stack after paying the cost.

Whenever you play a spell your priority goes over to the other player. Then when he does nothing it enters the battlefield and has 3 counters on it. You keep the priority first and can react on it entering the battlefield. This is the first time you can pay for it’s ability paying plus 2, paying does not give the other guy priority. When payed and thus jace having 5 counters the ability of looking at the top card is put on the stack. When on the stack priority goes to the other player who can’t do anything with his bolt because the +2 loyalty counters are already there.

Normally you can react on two counters being put on a creature because there is mana payed as a cost and the counters are the effect that are put on the stack. And like said before your opponent get priority to do something when you placed something on the stack before it resolves.

Opposing player never get priority when Jace enters play so dont get a chanse to bolt before Jace are at 5 loyalty in case acting player know what to do.

You can bolt jace the moment he hits play. He can only use his abilities at sorcery speed he can’t do crap if you want to bolt his when he hits the table. The moment jace enters the battlefield, bolt him. If you wait until he tries to cast +2, sure he’ll be a 5 and your just wasting a bolt, but you don’t have to wait.

IMHO, and from what I’ve heard elsewhere, it’s really only good in sealed. In extended they are TONS of cards to choose from, and this really isn’t in the top 60 that can fit your deck. Assuming you have red mana, terminate is hands down the best spell for destroying a creature. Same cc, and no restrictions. The next best is (in most cases) is doom blade, as it can kill anything up through baneslayer. The only thing doom blade can’t deal with is black creatures. That’s where Smother comes in. In a mono black vampire deck mirror match, it can be used to, for instance, get rid of a Vampire nighthawk. Along those lines, I’m pretty sure that’s why it’s included in the in the worldwake vampire into pack. In competitive play, I don’t think it really is strong enough to fit into a deck… it’s a good card, just not a great one.

Overall, I think that’s very close to the list I’d come up with. I’ve never built an M10 only deck, but just my 2 cents.

You might want to run a 4th garruk over a 4th rampant growth. I find garruk better for mana fixing early on, and nice for overrun later in the game. a late game rampant growth doesn’t do much.

I’d definitely run a 4th ajani over a captain of the watch, mainly for the lower casting cost. Alternately, you might take out a veteran armorsmith to free up the slot, or take out a rhox pikemaster.

The desklist has a lot of (relatively) high cost cards, so you might want to consider running a 25th land. If you play test it and find yourself wait on land I’d recommend it.

Regarding comment about Bazaar trader and artifacts… the Zendikar block has very few playable artifacts. Thus, I highly doubt they’d make a goblin that traded then… also artifact-stuff is typically blue, not red, making it even more unlikely…

While 2 bolts will certainly kill Jace, remember that his ability still resolves.

This is what makes Planeswalkers so useful sometimes. If they come into play and resolve there is no way to prevent the use of it’s abilities. Even if you pay Jace’s +2 ability and your opponent deals 5 damage to him via instants, the ability is still on the stack and resolves whether or not Jace is sent to graveyard immediately or not. It’s just like how if a prodigal pyromancer with gorgon flail taps to deal 1 damage to an opponents creature, even if the pyromancer is shocked and sent to the graveyard his ability determines his last existence on the battlefield as a red creature with deathtouch, and thus still resolves. This exact scenario was featured in one of Wizard’s Planeswalker’s Primers on Youtube.

Okay, so regarding Jace the Mind Sculptor:

Mana Cost: Seems reasonable. Could be a bit less like the old Jace was.
Starting Loyalty: 3 is a good loyalty to start off with (especially since I’ve seen the lightning-bolt debacle going on here.)
1st Ability: Wow, a Fateseal ability that puts 2 counters on Jace. I’m digging it. Plus you can use it on yourself if you need to.
2nd Ability: A virtual brainstorm for no gain or penalty? Too bad you can only use one planeswalker ability per turn.
3rd Ability: Meh. Boomerang was a lot better because you can cast it at instant speed.
4th Ability: Woah. Just woah. Granted, he’s probably gonna get blown up or exiled before this can go off (at -12??? Even Nicol Bolas’s ultimate costs less!!!), but if it does, that player is screwed guaranteed. He’ll only have single-digit turns to beat you at that point.
Overall: 4/5. A solid planeswalker with both strengths and drawbacks. I can probably see this starting between $15-$30 during prereleases.

I’m pretty unhappy with this Jace. The second blue planeswalker, and he’s running the exact same strategy. I know it’s still Jace, but really, blue has a lot of different ways to win, not just milling. I would have appreciated:

-8: Search target opponent’s library for up to five cards and remove them from the game. You may play those cards w/o paying their mana cost.

Just something to acknowledge some variety in blue. I do like his other abilities though.

I think Jace is great personally. I don’t see how people can say that his card has the same strategy as last time, when it really doesn’t. His [+2] is fanominal, letting you control what you or your opp. draws, his [0] is just as amazing, his [-1] just makes it so he can protect himself, and i know that his [-12] is crazy high loyalty cost, but i’m sure that with all the wwk cards, we’ll have enough decent control to use in order to make a way for him to actually activate his [-12].

G/U grow might actually be a contender. We’ll have to wait and see.

guys I was testing these 2 decks and soldiers won 3-0. i see that the mana ramp is good but not good enough. in the shop i gainde 6 out of 10 with mana ramp and 7 out of 10 with soldiers so i´m stickin with soldiers

The cool thing about this Jace’s last ability is that it wins by itself if it ever triggers. You don’t need decking support (Mind Funeral or Howling Mine) if you plan on setting that one off.

I can’t say I really like this. I mean volcanic fallout or earthquake is much better for boardwiping and banefire is better for direct damage and they even have fireball which is like the same thing but better :P. So, I think there taking a step in the wrong direction

Wow, I think you guys are certainly wrong on this one. Comet Storm, if real, is a very powerful card. Much more powerful than Fireball if you are going for multiple targets. For 8 mana, fireball can do 3 dmg to two targets . . .for the same investment this would be able to do 5 dmg to each of the targets. It requires a lot of mana to be useful, but with a lot of mana is devastating. Earthquake, is of course better for groundlings, but this is more flexible as it can hit flyers as well. This is pretty much exactly how I pictured Comet Storm. Pretty solid improvement on fireball and WILL be played in a Magic Christmasland type ramp deck. Worldwake is a small set, so Mythic status isn’t so bad for this card, considering what a bomb it is in limited.

That Elf Lord looks sweet. And the art is o.O sexy. Bad one drop. Good three drop. Awesome five drop. And just gets better from there. What does it replace in the Nissa’s Monument deck?

These kicker creatures are another reason for reprinting Smother I might add and gives more value to your Hexmages. My vampire deck runs four disfigure, and I’d love to replace them with Smother.

I like EDH, but unfortunately, no one where i live plays it…. oh, and the last time I played, someone played warp world, thus putting my general in my deck. that card should be banned in my opinion, it totally destroys one of the main pieces of the format.

Probably enough for a ligtning bolt to do the job. and isn’t amazing that a shock is only one less than a lightning bolt, you would thing a lightning bolt would do much more damage. I mean…..it’s lightning.

I agree with DooM and Jake, so it may not be the best card ever printed, but it’s surely the best deal X damage card I’ve seen. In a deck that rocks a lot of mana, Comet Storm could deal some serious instant speed pain.

Why would you kick it to target the same creature? It’s essentially a blaze that can be fireballed. The instant speed is what will make this any good, but I dunno it seems bad. The elf seems pretty terrible too, unless we get some cooler elves. It seems like a pretty ghetto lord and probably won’t even see play in other formats considering both extended and legacy have 12 better lords.

Oh I just realised it gives +1/+1 for each counter regardless of how those counters are on there. This card just got tighter. They better not errata this.

As for Comet Storm…it could maybe work in Grixis or help UR control playability.

Sounds interesting, and is definitely a neat card. Just not sure HOW strong it is. 2x of them would surely fit the 2 slots of Volcanic Fallout I play in Grixis though. Jace might take the place of the jaces I already play in that deck too.

Garruk would seem like a nice fit in here since it would also allow one more counter to be placed on the warcaller. But it seems pretty fun, depends on the other cards.

I don’t know… Allies disappointed me really bad. I beat up every one I know playing with Allies, and my Deck is not that good either though. So hopefully they’ll bring something better than the last time.

I can see a lot more elf decks after joraga warcaller comes out. Joraga Warcaller seems like it would make a great combo with oran-rief, the vastwood. I expect to see a lot of elves with tokens on them after worldwake is released. Comet Storm also seems rediculously powerful.

Whatever, we’re forgetting Garruk, who is cursed by Liliana in the Story. Also there is Elspeth, but according to the Story she doesn’t want to planeswalk ever again, although we got here some nice Soldiers in ZEN.
For Tezzeret there are too few Artifacts in this Set. Sharkhan or Ajani Vengeant would be possible, but i guess (again according to the story) there will be one or two new PW, who messed up Zendikar so the world wakes up.

My favourite is still Liliana, ’cause she’s got this powerful veil.

PFf one draft I had a really nice mana ramp black green deck with like, two baloth woodcrashers 3 harrows, terrastomper, and 4 giant scorpians for stalling, and i played against my bro in the final round who was playing blue white allies and he played 4 umara raptors and the blue rare ally. Comet Storm is way more powerful then the current hype suggests. Here’s my case:

1. It’s instant; compare it to the other instant speed X damage spells (i.e. – firestorm, heat ray, lightning storm, rock slide, starstorm, and volcanic geyser).
2. You pick its targets, making it superior to earthquake.
3. It’s damage is duplicated not divided, making it superior to fireball (i.e. – it costs 7 mana to hit 3 targets for 3 damage with comet storm and it costs 12 mana to do the same thing with fireball).

Basically, no other spell has ever been printed like this. It deserves Mythical Rare and if something existed above that it should get that rarity value instead lol. I remember all those years waiting for a good instant speed x damage spell. Finally its been printed.

older player,, never played tournaments,, and always play large decks. i’ve never had a 60 card deck built to come out the same way all the time. it seems like it would get boring. i like not knowing how it’ll come out. my circle of friends that i play with and i don’t have any deck building rules except no 5 of anything, excepting of course land. currently, i’ve got 29 decks up and running, with only one mono colored deck (vampires) every combination of 2 color decks, 2 five color decks (one of them invasion dragon, other more current mishmash) 2 four color, and several three color. i was just wondering if someone could explain the fun in smaller decks and predictable tourney play. my most recent killer combo to come out in play was with my blue and white deck. it was an older deck i retooled with a little shadowmoor and a little zendikar. the combo came out like this: soltari visionary > rite of replication kicked > enchanted evening. i hit my opponent with 12 damage and destroyed 6 permanents in one turn. very satisfying. it’s all about the killer combos,,, that being said,, where are the spoilers? i’ll be buying 2 boxes of worldwake preorder in hopes of getting my hands on the new jace. and what is the possibility that we’ll get more vampires?

Ok first off this is better then fireball no argument there the proof is in the math. Second, earthquake can’t hit a baneslayer comet storm can. Third, Banefire is sorcery speed this is instant so you can play it in response to spells (broken). Fourth, it can board wipe or deal ddirect damage depending upon your choices. IMO it’s the best X damage spell to date.

Well, the problem is when there’s a simple but great combo or deck… everyone just plays with it cause they don’t have to think.
I know people that come up with the weirdest decks you could ever think of. The best part? They work. Greatly. The even better part? It’s fun to play, since it’s not always the same fcking deck being played by hundreds of people and we share hints and improve. Not just that “My deck is Jund, wanna quit?” “Oh, mine’s Bant, ok.”

Magic is lacking originality, not only on the part of card creation (which is just completely fcked up… I played a Zendikar draft and couldnt link 2 cards together, they just didnt work together) but also on the deck creation. People create decks, give them cool names and stuff, put a card there, take a card there, but it’s essencialy the same.
Just take a look at vampire decks after Zendikar. Some prefer Hexmage, some prefer Bloodseeker, but it’s always the same thing.

I feel like people lost the sense of uniqueness. Some people are proud of winning games with decks created by other people. That’s just lame and noobish.

I agree. Now I’m not saying I don’t paly with decklists I find because I do use decklists from the web. I also build my own decks too though and they are usually more fun to play. Standard is so limited though there’s not a lot of room for multiple deck types. Usually one per color or comibination of colors depending upon the block. If you want more original deck lists I suggest playing in a more open field like extended, legacy, or vintage. You can practically build any deck you can think of and you have so many good cards to maximize your idea with. I used to play standard years ago but now I focus on legacy. Also give this Standard a little more time its only got 5 sets to pull from not the usual 7.

i don’t know where you guys get enough money to acquire all the cards for the “popular” decks, but i don’t have it. i’ve bought about 3 boxes of invasion, 3 of urza’s saga,( i stopped playing for about 5 years, and just picked up the cardboardcrack again last summer) and my 3rd is coming of 2010, with a 3rd zendikar next on my list, with more shards in the works. love the shards. other than that, i’ve got a box of this and a box of that, and of course select singles and a little trading, but i’ve never acquired a full set of anything. a deck with 4 of the same planeswalker? 4 baneslayers? not that i wouldn’t dig it,, and i AM hoping to get my second baneslayer when my box arrives next week, but damn,, for the most part, i just don’t have 4 of any rare cards, unless they’re inexpensive to acquire. i just can’t imagine spending the money to get all these important cards just to make a deck that’s “supposed to” come out the same damn way all the time. where’s the fun in that?

That’s a factor you need to have in mind when building decks.
Last deck I made ended up costing not more than 25€ and I traded most of them, so I probably paid like 10€.
It’s not the best deck in the world, but it’s pretty good for t2. I could easily get 2 or 3 decks just like that one if I traded for a Baneslayer (most cards are common)…

I know what you mean, there is plenty that can be done with a budget. I have been getting into trading and it works wonders, if you dont already maybe head down for a couple drafts if you are familiar with how they operate and get to know a few guys. If you have a bit of a more trustworthy friend who plays the game in the same playgroup it could be possible to pool your “rares” or cards together and borrow each others stuff and trade for the same use. Me and my buddy do it and it eases the stress on the wallet plus you can still get most of the things you need. Good luck with your magic adventures.

why would you ever have 4 of Nissa’s, or any planeswalker in a deck. you pull two and your first one survives, it’s just dead weight in your hand.

alot of people use four-of planeswalkers, even in competitive. It’s about raising your chances to get that particular card in hand. With your logic, we shouldn’t be playing four-ofs at all, which isn’t really wise.

First, you need to draw it. As it’s already been explained, having 4 of a card raises the chanecs of that happening.
Second, once you play a planeswalker it gets a bullseye on it’s forehead. Having another one in hand is better than you think.

That also applies to legendary cards.
But you should only have 4 of something that is really important and represents the core of your deck.
If you want to win using a planeswalker, go ahead and have 4. If you just think it’s helps a lot but isnt really important, then use 2 or 3.

Although there’s already been enough speculation about Bazaar Trader, allow me to throw in my useless 2 cents’ worth :p

I doubt it has something to do with new kinds of rarity. Never in the history of magic (as far as I remember) existed a rarity/edition symbol with 2 variable colours. It’s black, silver, gold or that new one (mythic rare). If they wanted a new rarity they’d choose another colour, not weird stuff.

The white ones are fanmade sloppy ones. Dont worry about “half-rares” if you look the fake art on the elf has the same symbol as the unconfirmed rare ally. Both are fanmade art so theres nothing to worry about. Rares have the inside filled black.

Yes and no, red is about winning at all costs. look at chandra ablaze second ability(discard hand and draw 3) and burning inquiry(draw 3 then discard 3) Red will fill its hand any way it can and bazaars are generally draw then discard so it makes perfect sense. Deek, if you play legitimate tournaments, then if you see a Progenitus it will be more like turn five or six, and I’ve seen it happen turn three after countering a creature. Summoning Trap is a bitch, isn’t it? Seriously, don’t be a dick. Believe it or not I know a little bit about the game.

And Planeswalkers are fast, but as reaper said, they aren’t necessary. The Planeswalker is not the centerpiece of any deck I’ve played (minus Jacerator). I’d rather control it, keep it away from its ultimate, and focus on taking down the player. There are, of course, situations where the Planeswalker needs to be destroyed, but the problem is as soon as I waste the burn on one another one drops. So most of the time, why bother?

Guys..guys..guys, Jaraga warcaller is baroke, all you need to do is put her in an extended or vintage deck and play immaculate magistrate…. it is a coat of arms / door to destiny just for elves… she will be amazing in the future as well as right now, plus we haven’t even seen all the synergy she will have with the other elves for the set so wait patiently and she will reveal all that is wonderful for this set.

Only drawback would be that you wouldn’t net a land that turn… which isn’t even a drawback mid-late game. With a fetchland you’d lose a land in play, but still have a 3 card advantage.

I could maybe see it without the additional land part, depending on the CC.

Turn 4 with the enchantment in play:
drop land 4a, tap the land you’re gonna return.
drop land 4b, tap the land you’re gonna return.
you’ll have 5 mana available and you’ll be drawing 2 cards. very breakable especially if its not a “you may” triggered ability.

this sounds stupid. it’s too broken in terms of card advantage. the player just isn’t paying enough this way to earn the card advantage.

If it has the effect you may play an aditional land then it’s to powerful! In theory the owner could pick up all of his deck as long as he has one land in his hand:
3 lands an the enchatnment in play, one land in hand. Play a land, return a land draw a card, play the returned land, return a land, draw a card… I think it must be without the draw a card bit or it’ll give an amazing card advantage!

You do realise retard, that you only get to play one additional land. And as far as I am aware there is no drawing cards off the landfall.

But the comet can be kicked any number of times, as explained in the text.

Also you can easily disrupt the comet by destroying one ot the targets in response to it. So the comet gets harder to resolve the more targets it has.

In response to the first part, Joraga’s text not actually taken from a card pic, as Comet Storm’s is, but the gist of multikicker is the same – kick the spell as many times as you like, so long as you can pay the cost each time.
About disrupting the comet – magic’s rules only counter a spell if every single target is gone. Getting rid of one target among many will not stop it from resolving.

i said it before and i will say it again i think that u guys need to get a grip. all the cards in zendikar that people thought would be awsome weren’t like rampageing baloth or lotus cobra they suck in turnument play they should stick to kitchen table magic in extended were you can us cards like one really old card theat say u may play any number of lands but take 1 damage for each beyond the frist and life gift so u gain one when u play a land so get a freaking grip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Joraga Warcaller: Wow, another Elf lord-ish creature. I have yet to see further synergy in Worldwake, but in the T2 format, is synergistic with a lot of other cards (Sigil Captain, Quest for the Gemblades, even Ohran Rief the Vastwood, just to name a few.). This should be worth at least eight dollars.

Comet Storm: Meh. The effect is okay for casual play, but I don’t think this will see much T2 play. I mean, sure it’s a lot better than Fireball, but I don’t think it deserves to be mythic. Probably a three-dollar card at best.

dude, you seriously need to calm down and learn how to spell…. people play magic because its fun, no matter what the format is. If you play RAMPAGING BALOTHS or LOTUS COBRA in the right deck they’re awesome. I saw a turn 3 baneslayer angel at my last invitational, so maybe the problem isn’t the cards…..

Um lemme just say (im not on aetheist haters side) bt religion does actually unite people. Without religion there would be no morality to begin with. People like theProphet ^ wouldnt be like that because there would be no example to show that being nice is a good thing. without religion there would be no long term goal in life for a lot of people.
