Pharika Art Wins a Chesley Award

Reddit

Magic: the Gathering has won another art award, with Peter Mohrbacher’s image of Pharika, God of Affliction, art directed by Jeremy Jarvis.

For those of you who don’t know, the Chesley Awards are awarded during the World Science Fiction Convention (WorldCon) weekend to artists and those who work with artists for the year. The full list was posted on their Facebook page here. Initially called the ASFA Awards, they were renamed the Chesleys after the death of Chesley Bonestell in 1986. The awards are chosen from the entire Association of Science Fiction & Fantasy Artists.

Magic has been submitting to more art awards and winning as of late. Ruric Thar, the Unbowed by Tyler Jacobson was a finalist for a Spectrum award as recently as 2013.

Art director Jeremy Jarvis went quiet for a few years without any of his artists winning awards. It’s wonderful to see he and his commissioned artists getting the praise they rightly deserve.

Pete Mohrbacher is the artist responsible for the very popular Angelarium project, which without a doubt, you’ve seen in the past year. One of his more recent pieces, Kokabiel, Angel of the Stars is now available for purchase in prints and other products.
