Gerard Grinds Out Grand Prix Baltimore!

Reddit

Gerard Fabiano is a man with a plan. Sitting down to draft in the Top 8 with Pro Tour Champions Ben Stark and Craig Wescoe, as well as Josh Utter-Leyton, the two-time Grand Prix Champion first picked a Dig Through Time and followed it up with Rakshasa's Secret. From there on out Fabiano filled his deck with powerful Delve spells early, removal in the middle, and creatures, including a Sagu Mauler later on in the draft.

Gerard's opponent in the finals was David Foster, playing in his second Grand Prix. Foster drafted an Abzan deck that was light on fixing but featured the potent graveyard hoser Anafenza the Foremost. It seemed to be the perfect card to sputter Fabiano's engine.

The finals took three games. The first went long - so long Gerard nearly decked himself with his two copies ofAbomination of Gudul. The second game saw Foster with an early Anafenza doing work. After an attack from Anafenza and Abzan Guide the players failed to adjust life totals correctly and Gerard ended up with a turn when he should have been dead. During the judge call, in a show of sportsmanship Gerard conceded and they were on to game three. In the final bout Foster again had an early Anafenza but Gerard managed to get it off the board with a Dead Drop. David Foster was never able to recover and Gerard clinched his third Grand Prix trophy.

Congratulations to Gerard Fabiano, your Grand Prix Baltimore champion!
