Affinity for Numbers: More Moon

Reddit

Magic is a game of numbers: sixty cards, twenty life, draw two cards, take seven damage, and add three counters. There are even more numbers surrounding the game—facts and figures, prices and trivia, they are everywhere. In Affinity for Numbers I uncover and highlight some of the more interesting numbers in Magic.

0 changes

A new Magic expansion means potential updates to the Banned and Restricted list, we've seen some big updates with the last three releases, but not this time. No changes were made to the list for the first time since July of 2015.

4 colors of bears

A 2/2 for 2 (one colorless and one colored) with no rules text is known as a bear in Magic, thanks to Grizzly Bears, the original such creature from Alpha edition. Bears were once squarely in the realm of Green and White but moved to Black with Walking Corpse in the original Innistrad. The plane is breaking rules once again with Falkenrath Reaver, the first Red "bear".

7 eligible players

The Magic Pro Tour Hall of Fame will enshrine its class of 2016 at Pro Tour Eldritch Moon, August 5-7 in Sydney, Australia. Seven players are eligible this year: Lukas Blohon, Lukas Jaklovsky, Seth Manfield, Owen Turtenwald, Gaudenis Vidugiris, Yuuya Watanabe, and Conley Woods. A couple of those guys are shoe-ins.

8 straight years

Hasbro, the owner of Wizards of the Coast, recently had its second-quarter earnings call during which they set the expectation that 2016 would be Magic's 8th straight year of revenue growth.

8% or less

According to the research in this report, there is a considerable gender gap in Magic art. Women illustrated 8% or less of the art in the last four expansions — Battle for Zendikar, Oath of the Gatewatch, Shadows Over Innistrad, and Eldritch Moon — accounting for 78 cards versus 984 by male artists.

10 hit points per round

The plane of Innistrad has been shifted into a Dungeons & Dragons setting, thanks to the Innistrad art book. The crossover booklet has stat blocks for a handful of monsters including Vampire Neonate, your typical vampire of Innistrad. These guys look pretty hard to kill, thanks to regenerating ten hit points at the start of each turn.

17 pump spells

Lone Rider transforms into the much sturdier It That Rides as One if you gained three or more life in a turn. What are the odds of making that happen in Limited? Not too bad: there are seventeen spells in Shadows over Innistrad and Eldritch Moon that pump power by at least two, many of which you'd probably play anyway.

33 Planeswalkers

Frank Karsten built a spreadsheet and did some math and recommends at least 33 Planeswalkers in your Commander deck in order to have a 75% chance to hit two when you play Deploy the Gatewatch. So decide, people, do you really want a deck with one-third Planeswalkers just to cheat a second into play?

$109.20

Based on this extra-crunchy article the expected value of a box of Eldritch Moon is just under $110. That accounts for selling fees. You can buy a box for around $95, so one could make some cash if one ignored the opportunity cost of sorting and selling all those cards.

126 new cards

Eldritch Moon arrived in Magic Duels on July 20, a few days ahead of the paper release of the set, and added 126 new cards to the digital game.

That's all the numbers I have for you today. If you also have an affinity for numbers, and have one you think I should share, let me know on Twitter @MrVigabool.
