Affinity for Numbers: The Pro Tour

Reddit

Magic is a game of numbers: sixty cards, twenty life, draw two cards, take seven damage, and add three counters. There are even more numbers surrounding the game—facts and figures, prices and trivia, they are everywhere. In Affinity for Numbers I uncover and highlight some of the more interesting numbers in Magic.

4 Spots

Owen Turtenwald's fifth-place finish at Pro-Tour Battle for Zendikar allowed him to move from fifth to first on the Magic Top 25 Pro Rankings. The biggest Pro-Tour swing was Paulo Vitor Damo Da Rosa up thirteen spots to number 5 after his top-8 finish.

7% Abzan

Abzan all but disappeared as a Standard top-deck contender at Pro-Tour Battle for Zendikar. Only 7% of the day-two Standard field was playing Abzan (including blue and red splashes.) Prior to the Pro Tour, Abzan Aggro was the top deck with a 22% metagame share between the top 64 of SCG Open Indianapolis and top 32 of SCG Open Atlanta.

12 Eldrazi

The Eldrazi attacked the Pro Tour in the form of Victoriano Lim's green and black deck stacked with Eldrazi, including full sets of Oblivion Sower and Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger. That's a lot of exile.

$39.56

The difference in price between the most-expensive mythic-rare card from Battle for Zendikar (Gideon, Ally of Zendikar) and the least-expensive (Akoum Firebird) is almost forty dollars. Seventeen rares also cost more than the mythic bird-of-fire.

72 Cards

Battle for Zendikar added 274 cards to Standard and 72 of those have seen play in a top Standard deck thus far. Of those cards, 25 have been creatures and 17 land.

149 Tiny Leaders

There are 149 leader option for Tiny Leader, a Commander variant that only allow cards with a converted mana cost of three or less. Battle For Zendikar added only one additional option.

Drana, Liberator of Malakir

$388

The cheapest Standard deck in the top-8 of Pro-Tour Battle for Zendikar cost $388.

Atarka Red is by far the cheapest competitive archetype in Standard, averaging just over $400 for paper cards and around $215 in Magic Online. Compare this to G/W Megamorph and Jeskai Black, the other top contenders, that will set you back around $800 on average.

1,436 Creatures

The 2/2 is the most-common sized creature in Magic with 1,436 examples so far. The next most common is the 1/1 with 1,315 total creatures. Twenty-nine creatures have a unique power/toughness combination including Spinal Parasite (-1/-1), Tree of Redemption (0/13), Isleback Spawn (4/8), Emrakul, the Aeons Torn (15/15), and a host of other Eldrazi.

$3,000

It pays to be a pro. Platinum-level pros get three grand for playing at a Pro Tour. Appearance fees scale down from there: $1K for the World Magic Cup, $500 for a World Magic Cup Qualifier, and 250 for a Grand Prix.

$31,700,000

Hasbro saw a decline of $31.7M in net revenue for its "Games" category between the third quarter of 2015 and 2014. Part of this year-over-year drop off was due to a decline in Magic revenue. According to the latest earnings statement, "The growth in franchise brand Monopoly and initial shipments of Playmation Marvel's Avengers were more than offset by declines in franchise brand Magic: The Gathering and several other games."

That's all the numbers I have for you today. If you also have an affinity for numbers, and have one you think I should share, let me know on Twitter @MrVigabool.
