The Last Oath

Reddit

We saw a number of different takes on controlling decks in Shadows over Innistrad Standard. Oddly enough, most of them have been Black-based rather than Blue. Unusually, Black has all the powerful card advantage spells in Read the Bones and Painful Truths, while Blue only has access to Oath of Jace. That said, Jace, Vryn's Prodigy is still an absurd Magic card, and W/B control decks may want to reconsider the decision to cut Blue:

Realistically, this is very similar to Black-White control. The core is still removal spells, Planeswalkers, and Transgress the Mind with a couple of manlands and swingy haymakers to control the late game. The key difference is in the raw power of Planeswalkers available to you once you opt to play the third color. How big of a difference does that make? All of it.

Jace, Vryn's Prodigy is a monstrously efficient card that helps sculpt draws, stall out of the board, and buy back removal spells. Both Jace, Vryn's Prodigy and Liliana, the Last Hope force your opponent to play into potential Languishes if they want to continue applying pressure early on. Even if your opponent doesn’t have anything, Jace, Vryn's Prodigy and Liliana, the Last Hope threaten to generate card advantage or game-ending emblems if they are left unchecked. The best part? Liliana, the Last Hope can rebuy Jace, Vryn's Prodigy once your opponent has invested substantial resources in getting him off the board.

In addition to Jace, Telepath Unbound, you also gain access to Narset Transcendent, which is an absurdly powerful Planeswalker in this format. The format is slow, and many decks won’t be able to apply serious pressure to Narset Transcendent through the density of removal and sweepers that Shaheen’s deck presents. This combined with Narset Transcendent’s naturally high loyalty means that you’ll be able to generate plenty of extra cards and rebound game-breaking spells like Dark Petition, which can find game-breaking singletons like Descend Upon the Sinful.

There are lots of powerful cards here, and while Black-White may have cards with higher raw power on average, Shaheen’s deck is much better at assembling an overwhelming advantage once one or two Planeswalkers start getting out of control. Even just on Planeswalker and an Oath of Jace can quickly turn into multiple Planeswalkers, multiple scries, and an untenable situation for your opponents. This may just be the powerful combination of cards that allows you to trump Bant Company without giving up too much against the other midrangey decks of the format.
