Old Dog, New Tricks

Reddit

Legacy is a format with an awful lot of viable decks. All manner of tribal aggro, every possible color combination of Delver of Secrets deck or midrange deck, and more combo decks than you can possibly list. Despite that, most of these decks are rehashes of other decks that have existed previously. It’s relatively rare that you get something that looks truly new. This take on Blue-White Aggro gets pretty close:

Your eyes do not deceive you. This is a Blue deck with Stoneforge Mystic that plays zero copies of Brainstorm. That’s because this deck isn’t looking to sculpt a gameplan going long. You’re looking to end the game as quickly as possible while providing maximum interactions, particularly against decks like Miracles.

The exciting part about this deck is its one drops. Judge's Familiar and Mausoleum Wanderer are not cards that are typically considered playable in Legacy. Suddenly you can fight over cantrips early on in the game while keeping up pressure, which slows down both combo decks and decks that skimp on lands in favor of cantrips. However, when you back those up with Meddling Mage and Spell Queller, suddenly you’ve got a great disruption engine. Your opponent has to decide whether to play into the one-drops, or wait so you can beat them down and get them with your more expensive flash creatures. It’s a little surprising to me that there are no copies of Spellstutter Sprite in this style of deck, but there’s also not a whole lot of space left over.

The most telling thing about this deck is that it includes four copies of Gitaxian Probe over the ubiquitous Brainstorm. The information on how to sequence your interactive effects, and particularly what card to name with Meddling Mage, is more valuable than the ability to sculpt your game plan and mitigate flooding out with Brainstorm.

If you’re looking for a new deck that beats up on the decks that are trying to be too low to the ground, this seems like a fun change of pace. If the format gets too fast or too creature-oriented, then your cheap disruption won’t really matter. But as long as the format is about Brainstorm and Ponder, why not try to get your opponents with Judge's Familiar and Mausoleum Wanderer?
